danpasca3714 Aug 2023 19:23Hello everyone, I am currently planning to build an IKEA Metod kitchen island that offers plenty of storage as well as an integrated seating area for dining or working. I want to take a practical approach and would appreciate tips on the best way to arrange the cabinets, which dimensions make sense, and how to incorporate comfortable seating without sacrificing storage space. Are there any well-tested combinations of Metod base cabinets that provide both open countertop space and flexible storage options? How have you solved the seating aspect in your kitchen islands – bar stools, built-in benches, or other ideas? It would also be important to know if any special reinforcements or additional compartments should be considered during assembly to ensure stability. Thank you in advance for concrete example concepts or recommendations!
Hello danpasca37, your project sounds exciting, and with IKEA Metod, you can find good solutions if you use the modularity correctly.
- For a kitchen island with plenty of storage, I recommend using mainly wider base cabinets (e.g., 80 or 90 cm wide) and planning with as many drawers as possible instead of just doors. Drawers offer better access and make more efficient use of storage space.
- The depth should be at least 60 cm (24 inches), preferably 65–70 cm (26–28 inches), to maximize countertop and storage space.
- You can add seating on the side: a taller base cabinet (e.g., extended with a panel) combined with an overhanging countertop provides space for bar stools. The countertop should overhang by about 30 cm (12 inches) for this purpose.
- Important when assembling: use additional corner brackets and reinforce the countertop, especially where it overhangs. For example, plywood panels or a thicker countertop can be used as a cover for stability.
A practical solution: place two 80 cm (32 inches) drawer cabinets in the center, with 40–50 cm (16–20 inches) wide cabinets on the left and right. One of these can be designed as a bench with a sturdy frame and a soft cushion. This way, you have storage space and seating without losing much room.
Would you like to sketch exactly how much space you have and where the island will be placed? That would help with tailored suggestions.

How did you solve the seating area at your kitchen islands – bar stools, built-in bench, or other ideas?I believe the seating area is the perfect finishing touch for any kitchen island! 🤩
Bar stools are very flexible; you can push them aside, keeping the space free for moving around. But if you want something cozier, a small upholstered bench can be really great – it creates a homely feel and invites you to stay longer.
For storage at the bench, you can use drawers or lift-up panels to make good use of the space. It’s important to plan the seat height carefully so that the countertop and seating area work well together.
My tip: An overhanging countertop on the seating side (about 30cm (12 inches)) provides plenty of legroom – this makes sitting comfortable and avoids losing storage space in the cabinet below.

Regarding storage, I would add: Avoid doors with internal pull-outs on the island, as these can often block the seating area when opened. It’s better to use pull-out drawers or blind corners with carousels, as these are simply more efficient.
Technically important is the weight of the countertop, especially with overhanging parts. Structurally, additional brackets or reinforcements under the countertop are mandatory to prevent sagging.
I also recommend setting the seat height to about 45 cm (18 inches) and the countertop height accordingly higher (around 90 cm (36 inches)), which corresponds to common bar heights and ensures ergonomic seating.
Finally, plan the electrical outlets above or below the countertop carefully if you want to use the island as a workspace. This will give you flexibility later on.
