Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to build an IKEA Metod kitchen island with an integrated seating area in my apartment. My goal is to figure out the best basic layout for such an island, where the seating area is both functional and visually well integrated into the island.

Specifically, I’m interested in which cabinet sizes and types work well to provide enough workspace and storage, while creating a cozy seating area for at least two people on one side. Ideally, I would appreciate tips on using cabinet carcasses and countertops, as well as ideas for attaching the seating elements so that everything remains stable and easily accessible.

Has anyone had experience with a similar project or can offer solid recommendations on how to best approach building a Metod kitchen island with an integrated seating area? Are there any special considerations to keep in mind, such as the correct countertop height for the seating side or suitable connecting elements?

I look forward to your suggestions and valuable advice!

Wow, there’s a lot happening here! 🛠️

I find the idea of building a seating island with Metod quite appealing. Just a practical tip: especially for the seating area, a sturdy solid wood countertop or a robust laminate worktop works best. This not only looks really cool but also feels much higher quality.

And yes, regarding the height: for seating, I recommend about 60-65 cm (24-26 inches) seat height – which you can achieve by reducing the plinth height or using special legs. If you use a standard kitchen countertop for the seat surface, it will often end up too high. So maybe build a frame to lower the worktop.

Also, don’t make the seat surface too narrow. The recommended width of 40-45 cm (16-18 inches) is ideal, otherwise it quickly becomes uncomfortable.

Finally, when cooking, you don’t have to stand alone anymore – everyone can sit comfortably together. Great idea!

Do any of you have experience with special Metod cabinets or other IKEA solutions that are intentionally lower, or do you usually have to improvise yourself?

The Metod series does not offer cabinet carcasses lower than the standard height. The following approach is recommended:

- Create a custom-built base or plinth that is lower than the standard Metod carcasses to serve as a seating area.
- Mount the countertop over the seating area with sufficient overhang.
- Complement the seating surface with suitable bar stools or benches.

Additionally, it is advisable to plan exact heights in advance to ensure ergonomically appropriate seating heights.

During assembly, connection elements should also be reinforced to ensure stability, as different heights can cause stress-related twisting.

Use base cabinets 80cm (31.5 inches) high for the seating surface, with a countertop that overhangs by 30cm (12 inches). Reinforce with sturdy brackets.

This recommendation is not very practical in reality. 80cm (31.5 inches) plus the countertop results in a seat height that is too high, causing ergonomic issues.

Instead, seating areas should have a height between 60 and 65cm (24 to 26 inches) for optimal comfort. A well-designed construction with lower cabinets or an adjusted frame is therefore necessary.

Recommendation: Take on-site measurements and plan individual adjustments, as the standard Metod modules are not directly suitable.
