ᐅ How can I build an IKEA BESTA as a multifunctional storage solution on casters for greater flexibility?

MomoronHello everyone, I am planning to convert my IKEA BESTÅ into a multifunctional storage unit, focusing especially on improving mobility by adding casters. The goal is to use it flexibly and practically in different rooms or positions – for example, as a room divider, a small media console, or a mobile workspace.
My question is: How can I build the IKEA BESTÅ into a multifunctional storage solution with casters for greater flexibility? I am particularly interested in the mechanical requirements for installing the casters, which types of casters are suitable (soft or hard floor casters?), how to maintain stability, and whether there are special adapters or components to optimally extend the system.
Who has had similar experiences or can offer tips for implementation? I am especially interested in ideas for combining storage space with movable surfaces. Thanks in advance!

My question: How can I convert IKEA BESTÅ into a multifunctional storage solution with casters for more flexibility?Hey Momoron, great idea! 😊 Adding casters to the BESTÅ definitely makes sense if you want to move it around frequently.
For the casters, I’d recommend soft rubber wheels—they’re really quiet on hard floors but also roll easily over carpets. Adjustable casters with locks are a must—otherwise, the unit can slide around unexpectedly.
As for installation: IKEA doesn’t provide pre-drilled holes for casters, so I usually screw metal brackets underneath the corners of the cabinet and attach sturdy furniture casters to them. It’s important to use as many screws as possible and position the mounts precisely; otherwise, the unit might become unstable.
To make it multifunctional, you can customize it further with storage bins or shelves—maybe even add a small drop-down door as an extension surface? There are no limits to your creativity.
Good luck and let us know how it goes!

It is important to use as many screws as possible and position the brackets precisely; otherwise, the unit will be unstable. This is a very important point! Especially with BESTÅ, stability can quickly be compromised if you simply screw on casters to the underside.
I often give the following advice: To make the furniture mobile yet stable, install small metal strips (for example, from a hardware store) on the bottom – these provide better support for the caster brackets, particularly if they can be screwed in from the back.
Also, pay attention to the load capacity of the casters you choose! Depending on its configuration, BESTÅ can easily weigh 30–50 kg (66–110 lbs) or more, so don’t use casters that are too small. Rubber-coated swivel casters with locks are best for flooring; they protect the surface and allow smooth movement.
If you want to use the furniture for different purposes (side table, media station), casters with locking mechanisms are highly recommended – this keeps everything secure when stationary.
If you have any questions about the mounting, just ask. I can also provide advice on the right tools to use.

How can I convert the IKEA BESTÅ into a multifunctional storage solution with casters for increased flexibility? I’m especially interested in the mechanical requirements for mounting the casters, which types of casters are suitable (soft or hard floor casters?), how to maintain stability, and whether there are any special adapters or components to optimally expand the system. The key points when retrofitting BESTÅ with casters are:
- Load capacity of the casters: Casters should support at least 50 kg (110 lbs) each to cover the overall load.
- Fastening hardware: Since the BESTÅ frame is usually made of particleboard, screws should be anchored into metal brackets mounted underneath to ensure a secure and durable hold.
- Type of casters: For hard floors, hard rubber or polyurethane casters are suitable (soft enough to protect the floor but firm enough for mobility). For carpeted floors, wider casters are recommended.
- Stability: To prevent twisting of the furniture, it’s advisable to attach the casters as far out towards the corners as possible.
- Multifunctional expansions: Using modular shelves, drawers, or pull-outs increases versatility.
There are no official IKEA casters available for retrofitting BESTÅ, but common furniture casters from hardware stores can be adapted accordingly. Alternatively, universal caster plates can be used to distribute the load evenly.
From a technical perspective, the most stable modification combines metal brackets, high-quality casters, and even load distribution inside the furniture. This prevents premature material fatigue and ensures long-term functionality.
