Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to assemble an IKEA Besta combination, which I want to enhance with integrated lighting. There are three main points that are particularly important to me: First, how to route the electrical wiring cleanly and safely behind the individual modules so that nothing is visible or intrusive. Second, which lighting systems work best – I am thinking about LED strips or spotlights but am open to suggestions regarding brightness and ease of use. Third, how to integrate the power supply as discreetly as possible, without visible cables or causing any damage to the Besta structure.

Has anyone here already completed a similar project or can provide concrete tips on how to build this Besta combination stably with lighting? Which materials, tools, and possibly special accessories are recommended? I welcome detailed input, as I want to complete this as a DIY project in a neat and high-quality manner.

Thank you in advance!

Hello Narlis,

Your project sounds exciting and feasible!

For the electrical work, I recommend using LED channels with covers that you can easily mount along the edges of the Besta units. This way, the cables stay well hidden and the lighting appears even. LED strips are an excellent choice because they are flexible, energy-efficient, and easy to install.

Make sure to choose a power supply with sufficient capacity, placed outside the furniture to avoid heat buildup and safety risks. For wiring, flat cables or wires work well, which you can attach inside the side panels using cable clips or Velcro straps.

Tip: IKEA sometimes offers suitable LED solutions, and compatible third-party products are also an option. Before purchasing, check that everything is compatible and that the colors match your interior.

If you have power outlets nearby, you can use a power strip with a switch to turn the lighting on and off separately.

I hope this helps you already – if you like, I can prepare a materials list for you.

I would recommend LED strips with a 12V power supply.

You can stick them on and cut them flexibly. Route the cables along the outside of the furniture frame and secure them with cable clips.

This way, nothing is visible and maintenance is easy.

In principle, integrating lighting into a Besta system is quite feasible but requires careful planning, especially regarding the following points:

- Cable routing: Cables should preferably be routed behind the back panels to avoid visible wiring. In the IKEA Besta modules, the back panels can sometimes be removed or drilled for cable passages.
- Type of lighting: LED strips offer the greatest flexibility. Choose warm white LEDs (around 2700–3000 K) for pleasant lighting. LED panels can also be used but are more complex to install.
- Power supply: A 12V or 24V power supply located outside the furniture is safer. Make sure the power supply has sufficient capacity; calculate about 5 watts per meter (3.3 feet) of LED strip.

Tools:
- Drill with appropriate bits for small cable routing holes
- Screwdriver
- Cable clips or holders
- Possibly a professional cable cutter for LED strips

And importantly: Disconnect the power before starting any electrical work or use only low voltage.

Additionally, you can use dimmers to control the light intensity individually.

I agree with that, but be careful with the length — plan ahead how many meters (feet) you will need to avoid needing to reorder.

Hey, I love enhancing my furniture with lighting, and the Besta is perfect for that! 😊

I used LED strips from a hardware store and simply stuck them to the inner edges of the shelves. It’s important to measure carefully beforehand so the strip fits exactly. Even better: You get more flexibility with a remote control for dimming and color changing!

This kind of project is really fun, even if it feels a bit daunting at first. Don’t be put off by cables and technology – it’s easier than you think! If you want, I can tell you exactly which products I used.

Good luck, it’s going to look great!
