Hello everyone,
I am currently about to assemble my first Ikea Malm chest of drawers and want to make sure I make as few mistakes as possible. My question is: What important steps and tips can you recommend to assemble a Malm chest of drawers without errors? I am especially interested in how to avoid common pitfalls so that everything turns out stable and level, and I don’t have to take it apart again at the end.
I generally have some experience with furniture assembly, but the Malm chest of drawers involves quite a few screws and parts that need to fit together correctly. I would appreciate concrete advice on the process, which tools are helpful, and what to pay close attention to. Thanks!

Hello disulo,
First of all, it’s good that you want to approach the assembly carefully. For the MALM dresser, I recommend the following procedure:
1. Prepare your workspace: Clear enough space, sort and check all parts. Make a list of any missing screws immediately.
2. Read the instructions carefully: Pay special attention to the sequence, as impatience often leads to assembling parts prematurely.
3. Have the right tools ready: A Phillips screwdriver and ideally a cordless drill with torque control.
4. Check the fit of the parts: Sometimes wooden dowels or drill holes don’t fit exactly; gently adjust as needed without forcing.
5. Check intermediate steps: After each major section, verify that all screws are properly tightened and that parts are aligned straight.
Avoiding
In summary: patience, a good workspace, and the right tools are key. If you want, I can also give you tips on how to identify faulty fittings.

One thing that helped me is to pause regularly during construction and carefully check that everything is securely in place and fits properly. Stress doesn’t help in these situations.
It might sound obvious, but this approach has saved me a lot of trouble in my furniture projects.
I wish you the best of luck. Making mistakes is part of learning, but with care and support from this community, I’m sure everything will work out great!

Good morning disulo,
I can only agree. Especially with the MALM, it is essential to follow the assembly instructions step by step and tighten the screws properly only at the end. Another tip is to make sure all the holes are clean and free of chips or leftover pieces. I have often encountered problems when parts were not assembled completely clean.
Occasionally checking the alignment – for example with a spirit level or a straight ruler – is also very helpful.
If this is your first MALM assembly, I also recommend installing the drawers only at the very end to avoid any binding or pressure marks.
Don’t be discouraged; these dressers are generally very well designed, but even slight inaccuracies become noticeable quickly.

Here is a slightly more technical approach:
1. Before starting, double-check that all parts and screws in the delivery are complete and undamaged.
2. Use appropriate tools: a Phillips screwdriver of the correct size, and possibly a torque wrench for precise tightening.
3. Be careful with wooden dowels and screw holes to avoid any stresses or warping.
4. Continuously check the flatness of the frame during assembly, especially along the front edges and the drawer slides.
5. The instructions often highlight critical points, such as the recommended screw depth—follow these exactly.
6. Only fully tighten all screws after the final alignment is achieved.
This method helps prevent warping and misassembly, which can be difficult to fix later.
