ᐅ How can I assemble IKEA Platsa units in rental apartments without drilling?

Efecan4Hello everyone, I’m planning to install an IKEA Platsa wardrobe system in my rental apartment, but I’m not allowed to drill holes in the walls. My question is: How can I securely, stably, and safely install IKEA Platsa in a rental apartment without drilling into the walls or floor? I have considered clamp or plug-in systems, but I’m unsure if they will support the weight and maintain stability, especially when combining and stacking cabinets. Maybe there are also tricks, like using suitable tension rods to stabilize the cabinets without damaging the building structure. I would appreciate any tips on mounting methods or alternative solutions!
Hello Efecan4, I’m familiar with your concern, as many rental apartments have similar restrictions. First of all: IKEA PLATSA is a modular system, but usually the cabinets are either wall-mounted or fixed to the floor. If drilling is not allowed, the following options are available:
- Using tension rods between the floor and ceiling can secure the system from bottom to top. This prevents the cabinets from tipping over.
- In combination, placing non-slip mats under the feet can minimize movement.
- Another option is furniture connectors, which provide stability by linking the cabinets together.
Important: Personally, I don’t fully trust adhesive mounting methods, as they can fail over time. Tension rods or heavy bases are more reliable. Have you already considered how many cabinets you want to combine? The taller the arrangement, the more important it is to secure against tipping.

That’s exactly the crucial point: stability is significantly limited without drilling. I would also question how “stable” is really defined here. A heavily loaded PLATSA cabinet could pose a safety risk without wall anchoring.
So my thought is: could you use a combination of weight (for example, heavy contents), connections between the cabinets, and tension rods? This helps reduce tipping. Placing them on a stable base with high friction is also important.
However, it remains questionable whether, under heavy load, you might still run into issues with the landlord if damage occurs from falling furniture. Maintaining stability without drilling is always a compromise involving safety risks.
Super interesting topic! I also set up PLATSA in my rental apartment without drilling, using a combination of ceiling tension rods and the supplied connectors between the individual cabinets. This keeps them stable and prevents them from tipping over.
Additionally, I placed non-slip mats under the feet for extra grip. Of course, it’s not as rock-solid as being screwed in, but I connected the system cleverly so that it practically becomes one unit.
When assembling, make sure to have a good, level surface, as even small unevenness can negatively affect stability.
I can only say: it works perfectly and looks really good. So don’t hesitate, just give it a try! 🙂
