Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to install my new kitchen using IKEA Metod cabinets and want to include integrated lighting. So far, I have only assembled the Metod cabinets themselves but have no experience with how to properly and, above all, safely integrate the lighting system into the kitchen units. My question is: How do I correctly assemble IKEA Metod cabinets with integrated lighting – meaning the assembly of the carcasses including cable routing, installation of LED strips or light sources, and their connection to the electrical supply?

I know the basic steps of furniture assembly and have some electrical knowledge, but I am uncertain about the best way to install lighting specifically in Metod units without cables getting in the way or the wiring looking messy. Are there any important details or special installation tips to keep in mind when working with Metod?

I would appreciate any tips, experiences, or advice on common mistakes to avoid. Thanks in advance!

Hello klaba,

[vielen Dank für deine ausführliche Frage!]

Installing IKEA Metod cabinets with integrated lighting is definitely doable, but it requires some planning. Basically, you should assemble the cabinet carcasses completely and securely first. After that, you can install the LED strips or lighting systems – these usually come with custom clips or adhesive tapes to easily attach them to the underside of the wall cabinets or inside shelves.

An important tip: Use the designated cable channels on the cabinet backs so the cables don’t hang loosely. Avoid routing cables through cabinet fronts or bending them unnecessarily. Most IKEA lighting sets have plug connectors that can be easily linked together. Once routed, connect everything to the appropriate power supply unit and then to the electrical network.

When connecting to power, make sure all components use a protective earth (ground) conductor and that no exposed wires remain. If you’re unsure, I recommend consulting a professional at least for the final step.

If you’re not experienced with DIY: Many IKEA kitchen lighting systems are plug-and-play, so no custom wiring or connector blocks are needed. The power supplies can usually be concealed inside wall cabinets or corners.

I’m happy to provide a brief checklist if you want. Good luck!

Hello klaba,

I’d like to add a few practical tips to Julien’s helpful advice based on my own Metod installation experience:

- Make sure to accurately measure the cable length for the lighting before fully assembling the cabinets. Otherwise, you might have trouble extending or rerouting the cables later.

- Cable channels are important not only for aesthetics but also for safety. Always route the cables in a way that prevents them from being pinched, especially near cabinet doors and their opening mechanisms.

- Another point is the use of self-adhesive LED strips. Although IKEA’s are usually good quality, be sure to stick them onto clean, grease-free surfaces to avoid them peeling off.

- If you plan to hide the power supply, check in advance that it has sufficient ventilation. Otherwise, the power supply could overheat.

- Regarding the electrical connection: as Julien mentioned, if you’re unsure, consult a licensed electrician. IKEA lighting systems often use low voltage plus a power supply, but safety should always come first.

Good luck with your project!

- Fully assemble the cabinets.
- Use cable channels in the cabinet backs.
- Attach the LED strips at the designated locations.
- Break connections only at the specified points.
- Mount the power supply hidden but ventilated.
- Have a professional handle the electrical connection if necessary.
