Hello everyone, I would like to start a discussion on the topic “How can I assemble IKEA Hemnes furniture to make it especially durable?” My question specifically concerns assembly and handling techniques that go beyond simply fitting the parts together. I am particularly interested in how to improve stability without damaging the original furniture, which tools and aids have proven useful, as well as tips on the material behavior (wood and fittings) in everyday use. Experiences with reinforcements, adhesive techniques, or wood care would also be great, so that my Hemnes furniture lasts as long as possible and doesn’t become wobbly or damaged after just a few years. Thanks in advance for constructive answers!

I would like to add that during installation, it is important to ensure all plastic and metal connectors are properly secured. The most common weak points are the corner joints and the attachment of the back panel. From my own experience, using additional metal brackets has proven very effective—they provide significantly more stability over time. It is also important that the back panel is not only nailed but also screwed in place to prevent any looseness.

Make sure to use the right tools as well: a cordless drill with adjustable torque is invaluable, as it helps avoid over-tightening or under-tightening screws.

The topic of furniture durability really resonates with me because I’ve often experienced my Hemnes pieces becoming loose or creaky. What I find interesting is the emotional aspect: you invest so much time and create a place of comfort. It’s reassuring to hear that many here approach the subject thoughtfully and carefully.

Regarding the tips: I was afraid of causing too much damage with such optimizations, but see

For reinforcement, you can also use wooden dowels, which handle tensile loads better than metal connectors alone.
– that encouraged me to try this small investment, and I’m glad I did.

For anyone still unsure: it’s worth inspecting the furniture carefully and calmly before tightening each screw – it saves nerves and increases enjoyment later.

That’s interesting, but I wonder if that goes against IKEA’s design concept? These visible metal brackets can affect the furniture’s appearance, and ideally, you should stay as close as possible to the original design to maintain value, especially if you plan to resell it.

Also, you need to be careful because too many screws can unnecessarily strain the wood. I would therefore recommend carefully documenting exactly where reinforcements are truly needed and applying them only in those specific spots.

Using adhesive techniques is also a double-edged sword: wood glue makes everything more stable but makes future repairs more difficult.
