Hello everyone, I am planning to set up some Ikea Hemnes furniture in my small apartment, but space is very limited. My main question is: How can I assemble or arrange Ikea Hemnes furniture to take up as little floor area as possible without losing functionality? I am thinking about smart placement, possible modifications during assembly, or tips on optional components that might save space. Does anyone have experience or specific advice for this particular type of furniture and space optimization? Thank you!

Even if the space is limited, functionality and ease of use should be ensured.

Thanks for the advice, that’s exactly what I want to avoid – reaching practical limits too quickly with vertical use. What would be your opinion on how much height is reasonable for Hemnes shelves before storage capacity becomes secondary to accessibility?

In my experience, a maximum of two to three shelves above eye level is practical; beyond that, it becomes inconvenient and the space is used less efficiently, since people rarely die trying to reach the top shelf.

If tall shelves are necessary, use stools or small ladders to reach them and store items there that you rarely need.

An optimal room height is about 180 to 200 cm (70 to 79 inches), with the upper shelves used for storage boxes. The top 2-3 shelves should hold items that are only needed occasionally. It is important to have enough space in front of the furniture so that doors and drawers can be opened comfortably. Hemnes doors can sometimes take up a lot of space in tight rooms. There are suggestions to replace them with sliding doors, although this requires some DIY skills.

To save space, I have often arranged Hemnes dressers to serve as room dividers. This way, you can achieve two goals at once: storage and efficient room layout.

That’s an important point, thank you. Are there simple alternatives without having to spend a lot of money on new doors or renovations? For example, changes to the door construction or alternative fittings?
