Hello everyone,

I am about to assemble my first Malm wardrobe from IKEA, and as a beginner, I naturally have some uncertainties. Since I want to complete the assembly as smoothly and error-free as possible, I would like to ask here specifically for good tips and strategies.

How would you recommend inexperienced furniture builders approach the Malm system? Which tools are truly useful, what are common sources of mistakes, and how can the often somewhat confusing assembly instructions be best understood? Any advice on time management and handling possibly missing parts would also be very helpful.

I would appreciate it if you could share your experiences or maybe suggest helpful videos, links, or personal do’s and don’ts.

Thanks in advance!

First of all: I believe the effort and outcome of assembling the Malm system strongly depend on how well you can follow the instructions. This is often the main challenge. Many beginners underestimate how important it is to fully understand each step before starting to screw parts together.

I wouldn’t just start building blindly but rather carefully review every drawing and note. If any part of the instructions is confusing, it’s better to consult forums or the official IKEA support instead of improvising randomly.

Additionally, it’s useful to have all the necessary tools ready before starting – for example, a good Phillips screwdriver (preferably with a proper handle, not a tiny one). A small hammer and an Allen wrench set can also be helpful.

I also consider careful pre-planning critical: work on a flat and stable surface, unpack all parts, and check that everything is actually there – missing materials cost time and cause frustration later on.

This is a key point I would like to elaborate on. Especially with the Malm system, there are many screws, wall plugs, and wooden parts that at first glance appear almost identical. I therefore strongly recommend cross-checking the components with the manual before starting, and it’s best to mark them lightly with a pencil.

To make the assembly process as stress-free as possible, here is a step-by-step guide:

1. Open all boxes and sort the parts neatly (panels, small parts, screws, fittings).
2. Skim through the entire manual to get an overview of the overall process.
3. Prepare your tools: Phillips screwdriver, small hammer, possibly a rubber mallet, and Allen keys.
4. Prepare your workspace: ideally on a soft surface (carpet or blanket) to prevent marring the surfaces.
5. Proceed step by step, never assembling parts too early, as this often results in having to disassemble everything later.

Also a warning: Screws are often not tightened enough – make sure to check this, but avoid overtightening, as this can cause the material to tear out. If you want, I can give you more detailed tips on specific assembly steps if you tell me where you feel most uncertain.

Oh, I know that well! The Malm series is really popular, but assembling it can be quite challenging. My advice: Stay patient and celebrate even the small progress! 🙂

For me, it really helped to dry-fit all the parts first—don’t tighten any screws yet, just put everything together carefully and check the order. That way, you’ll feel much more confident when it’s time to fully tighten everything.

Also, having a helper can make a big difference, especially when holding large parts—even though it can sometimes be hard to find someone. But honestly, it’s easier and faster when working together!

And very important: Take breaks! You don’t have to finish everything in one day. Finally, good luck—you’ll definitely manage! And if you get stuck, feel free to ask here, we’re happy to help! :-)
