SEBAR31Hello everyone,
I recently assembled an IKEA Besta shelving unit with drawers and noticed that the drawers don’t slide smoothly. They catch at certain points and don’t seem to be properly aligned. My question to the community is: How can I adjust the IKEA Besta drawers myself to ensure optimal operation?
Specifically, I mean:
- Which screws or mechanisms are relevant for this?
- Are there specific techniques to improve the alignment?
- What should be kept in mind during adjustment to make sure the drawer runs smoothly and without tilting?
I would prefer not to disassemble the entire system, but only make targeted adjustments to improve the sliding function. I would be very grateful for detailed and practical advice. Thank you in advance!

How can I adjust the IKEA BESTA drawers myself to ensure optimal function? To properly adjust the BESTA drawers, it is important to first fully pull out the drawer and carefully inspect the slide system. IKEA BESTA drawers typically use a metal rail system with either side or bottom mounting.
The following steps can help with the adjustment:
- Loosen the screws on the guide rails slightly to allow minimal movement.
- Align the drawer by gently shifting it horizontally and laterally so that it slides smoothly and evenly.
- Then tighten the screws again, but avoid overtightening to prevent warping.
- If the drawer catches slightly, check whether the rails are clean and free from dirt or debris.
It is essential that the system is free from overload and deformation. If the side panels of the furniture are crooked or the rails are bent, these should be corrected first. This will make the adjustment more effective.

Pull the drawer completely out. Slightly loosen the screws on the metal slides. That’s exactly what I did – and it worked perfectly right away! 😊
I would also recommend checking the slide itself for any bending; sometimes a little lubricant (e.g., silicone spray) helps for smoother movement.
Don’t get discouraged—these kinds of adjustments are really doable, and you’ll feel great once everything runs perfectly again!
