Hello everyone,

I would like to start a focused discussion today to find out the best ways to simplify assembling the Malm series from IKEA. I understand that having the basic tools and some skill is important, but I’m wondering if there are specific steps, techniques, or aids that noticeably make the process easier.

Especially when assembling larger units or multiple dressers at once, people look for methods that save time and reduce common frustrations. Who has experience with this, maybe some good tips regarding organization, assembly order, or handling the often small parts?

I am particularly interested in whether you use any tools or assembly methods not mentioned in the instructions but that make the process more practical. Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Good evening,

I’m happy to address your question and first offer a well-structured tip for assembling the Malm series. In my opinion, the most important thing is to fully unpack and sort all the individual components before starting. It may sound obvious, but jumping in right away often leads to confusion.

It is also helpful to create a clean and stable work surface—such as a carpet or several blankets—to prevent fittings or screws from getting lost, and to avoid scratching the wooden parts.

Additionally, having an assistant can make the process easier, especially when joining large side panels or the worktop.

Regarding tools: I always use a cordless drill with torque control to avoid over-tightening screws. I also recommend using a small bowl or container for screws and dowels, so you don’t have to keep searching for them.

In short: organization, patience, and the right tools make for a less stressful assembly.

Hi,

I know the feeling when you’re faced with a pile of packaging and individual parts. It’s really helpful to mentally organize yourself before starting assembly and maybe plan the build in stages. For me, it’s reassuring to keep in mind that making mistakes is part of the process and that you won’t get everything perfect on the first try 🙂

With that said, I can only agree with

I’d also like to add that small aids like a magnetic pickup tool can work wonders. Constantly picking up screws, especially when they roll away, can really throw you off.

It always encourages me to see others keep going despite small hurdles, because the result often turns out much better than expected!

Hello everyone!

Honestly, I think it’s best not to stress too much about the Malm series! :-) I’d say this: Whoever assembles it should definitely take coffee breaks now and then and not expect to finish everything within an hour.

For example, it helps me to flip through the instructions several times before handling the first part and to mentally go over the really tricky steps in advance.

A little tip from me: Treat the dowels with a bit of wax or soap beforehand; this makes assembly easier and the parts fit together more smoothly.

Also: Never fully tighten the screws before everything is properly aligned.

Hello everyone,

I would like to add to the discussion from a more technical perspective. The construction of the Malm series follows a standardized principle, where understanding the composite mechanics of the individual components is crucial.

First, it is important to carefully read the assembly instructions—not just superficially, but step by step. Common mistakes often occur because screws are placed in the wrong positions, which later affects the structural integrity.

A tip from me is to mark all screws along with the corresponding fittings and wooden dowels beforehand and place them next to the assembly drawings. This helps prevent mix-ups.

I can only agree with this; precise screwing is essential here.

Additionally, I recommend checking each component for damage, especially when assembling the back panels and drawer slides. Small dents can cause problems in later use.

What could be really helpful: how many dressers are you planning to assemble? There are slight efficiency advantages if you build multiple units in a sort of assembly-line process, as you gain routine and can sort parts more effectively.

If you like, feel free to describe your exact approach, and I can give you more specific advice.

Hello everyone!

I really like this discussion! The Malm series definitely has the potential to make everyday life easier – but only if you commit to the assembly process :-)

What helped me the most was actually reading the entire instruction manual before touching a single screw. Sounds simple, but it’s easy to overlook small details.

A great tip: Assemble the dresser on a large, flat surface and use a cut-open, sturdy cardboard sheet or a table runner as a protective layer to keep everything clean.

That’s exactly right! And don’t forget: Celebrate small successes along the way! When the first drawer fits, it’s a great feeling of achievement that motivates you.

So, to all DIYers: Go for it, and remember to enjoy the process 🙂
