Hello everyone, I have recently noticed that IKEA Malm dressers at my place or my friends’ homes sometimes do not stand perfectly straight or appear slightly crooked. I have especially observed this with the longer or wider models.
I am curious why this happens. Is it due to the construction method, material warping, assembly errors, or the floor on which they stand? Are there design-related reasons why Malm dressers often are not completely straight?
I would appreciate a professional explanation or any experiences that could shed light on this issue. Thank you!

Environmental factors such as humidity or temperature can cause minimal material deformation That makes sense to me. Are there any recommendations on how to reduce these effects? For example, should Malm dressers be kept away from areas with high humidity or significant temperature fluctuations?

Floor as an important factor I have standard hardwood floors that are generally quite level. Would it still make sense to use shims if the dresser wobbles?
Exactly. To minimize material warping, it is advisable to place the dresser in a well-climate-controlled room, meaning stable humidity and consistent temperatures are preferred.
Additionally, it helps to avoid positioning the furniture directly against exterior walls or heating units, as humidity and temperature can vary significantly there.
Regarding assembly: Each screw should be tightened carefully to prevent stresses. It is also recommended to occasionally retighten the screws, as they may loosen over time.

Many people underestimate the impact that small assembly errors or loose connections can have on the stability and precise alignment of a piece of furniture.
Let’s also take a look at the construction method of Malm: The dressers often use back panels that are only fixed with small nails, which do not provide any additional stability against warping. Reinforcements or corner brackets are often missing. This also explains why a piece of furniture can warp under load or over time.
Hey, I don’t think this whole topic is such a big deal. 🙂
I believe that if a Malm chest of drawers stands slightly unevenly and isn’t perfectly level, it just gives it character and makes the room feel a bit more lively.
Of course, you don’t want it to be crooked, but for the price, these small imperfections are totally acceptable. And as already mentioned: a few small wedges or felt pads under the feet, and it’s all sorted!
So no reason to panic — more like, "A little tilt brings cheer!" 😉

I would like to add a brief guide on how to properly level the Malm chest of drawers:
1. Use a spirit level to check the floor where the chest of drawers is placed.
2. Ensure the feet of the chest make even contact with the floor.
3. If the floor is uneven, use thin felt pads or wooden shims to level the chest.
4. Tighten all screws and connections again, especially when assembling larger chests.
5. Avoid placing the chest directly next to wall heaters or damp areas to minimize material deformation.
Following these steps will help keep the chest more stable and visually level.

"Crooked makes happy!" 😉I find that very charmingly put. Yet many people who are currently buying a new dresser interpret this apparent flaw as a quality issue, which causes uncertainty.
I have often experienced with friends that the fear of supposedly "crooked" furniture only leads to frustration. Perhaps we can emphasize here that slight tolerances in furniture like Malm are normal and usually nothing to worry about.
Furthermore, I think it's great when practical tips are shared here that help reduce fears and provide clarity.
