Hello everyone,

A few weeks ago, I bought the Ikea Brimnes chest of drawers. I noticed that the drawers are quite loud when opening and closing, which can be especially bothersome in the evening. I suspect this is due to the drawer slides and the material of the drawers.

My question is: How can the drawers of the Ikea Brimnes be made quieter in an efficient and lasting way, without compromising functionality or significantly altering the drawers? Are there any proven methods or simple tricks you would recommend?

I’m not looking for general furniture assembly instructions, but specific tips for reducing noise in the drawers of this particular series. Thank you in advance!

The noise in Brimnes drawers mainly comes from the simple metal rails and their direct contact with wood or plastic parts. Effective measures include:

- Checking and tightening all screws to prevent wobbling.
- Applying self-adhesive felt strips or foam padding at contact points, especially along the inner edges of the drawer sides and the guide rails.
- If available, lightly lubricating the sliding surfaces with a suitable lubricant (e.g., silicone oil), but not too much to avoid attracting dirt.
- Alternatively, replacing the metal rails with dampened or ball-bearing drawer slides, which can still be kept visually discreet.

These measures often significantly reduce squeaking and drawer noise, but are technically limited by the design and materials used.

Exactly, I can confirm that. I had the same question when my Brimnes drawers started squeaking. My solution was to thoroughly clean the runners – sometimes dust or small particles build up, which increase the noise. After that, I glued felt pads where the drawers rest.

I also recommend not overloading the drawers, as they glide more smoothly with less weight. If you like, you can also polish the runners with a bit of clear wax (such as furniture or beeswax) to reduce friction.

By the way, there are durable damping pads that can be stuck behind the drawer front to reduce impact noise when closing. This is especially helpful if the drawer is sometimes closed too quickly.

That just makes me smile – the "less is more" principle definitely applies to furniture too 🙂

But seriously: if you treat the drawer slides with a little silicone spray, you’ll usually get smoother operation and quieter movement. Warning: don’t use WD-40, as it often dries out too much and attracts dust.

If you’re a bit handy, you can also retrofit drawer stops or soft-close dampers from IKEA or third-party suppliers. They might not be designed specifically for Brimnes, but they can usually be adapted.

You don’t always have to replace the entire dresser; sometimes a small adjustment is enough to bring peace back.

Here is a brief guide to systematically reduce the noise of the Ikea Brimnes drawers:

- Step 1: Remove the drawers and check the runners. If they are rusty or heavily soiled, clean them and apply a thin layer of silicone oil.

- Step 2: Attach felt strips or foam rubber to the side contact points. Make sure to apply them evenly and not too thickly, to avoid making the drawer movement too stiff.

- Step 3: Check that all screws are tight, as loose connections can increase vibrations.

- Step 4: If possible, lightly deburr all metal parts. Sometimes sharp edges cause scratches or rubbing noises.

- Step 5: Wait and test – sometimes the noise improves over time due to slight wear of the padding, and the thickness can then be adjusted.

A final tip: If you don’t mind a bit of DIY, you can purchase and install soft-close magnetic systems separately. They do cost a little but also ensure silent closing.

I hope this structured approach helps.
