Hello everyone, I’m looking for effective methods to ensure better alignment of BILLY shelves. Often, even when assembled correctly, the shelves end up slightly crooked or become misaligned over time, which not only looks unattractive but can also affect stability. What recommendations are there to achieve optimal adjustment from the start? Are there special tools or tricks that help with shelf height adjustment and wall anchoring? Any advice regarding uneven floors or walls would also be great, as I want to set up the shelf in a room with exactly these conditions. Thanks for your tips!
For proper alignment of BILLY shelving units, I recommend first thoroughly checking the wall for any irregularities. The shelf should always be placed against as flat a wall as possible, as even small unevenness can affect the overall appearance.
A spirit level is essential—for both the horizontal alignment of the top and bottom panels and the vertical installation of the side panels.
Using shims or small wooden pieces under the shelf can compensate for uneven flooring. Securing the shelf firmly to the wall with the included wall plugs and screws increases stability and reduces wobbling.
Additionally, it is advisable to insert the shelves only after the unit has been securely fixed, allowing for precise adjustment.

A spirit level is essential ...This is a very important point. In addition, it should be noted that BILLY shelves include assembly instructions with recommendations for wall mounting. It is important to use the appropriate wall plugs for the specific wall type (e.g., concrete, drywall), as secure anchoring is crucial for proper alignment and long-term stability.
For uneven floors, using adjustable furniture feet or rubber shims that can be finely adjusted is worthwhile to level the shelf precisely. This helps prevent the shelf from wobbling or warping later on.
Furthermore, it is advisable during assembly not to fully tighten the individual components at first, but to tighten them loosely initially, so that after the final alignment all screws can be evenly tightened.
Anyone who loves BILLY shelves knows: getting the perfect alignment can sometimes be quite tricky. 😅
Besides the technical tips, here’s a little trick: if you assemble the shelf loosely at first and then position it using a thick book or a spirit level as a reference, you quickly get a feel for the right alignment.
A bit of patience helps (even if it’s frustrating), especially with old or uneven floors. It’s better to check and fine-tune several times – this way you avoid corrections later and the annoying task of adjusting wobbly furniture.
And don’t forget to secure it to the wall, or the shelf will wobble out of place with every bump. 🚶♀️😉

Also, it makes sense not to fully tighten the individual components during assembly ...I can only emphasize that tip! After considering the instructions, I first loosely connected all the parts and then used a spirit level to position the shelf exactly to the millimeter. After that, I tightened all the screws, and the result looked much better than in my first attempt.
Another tip from me: on uneven floors, it helps to slightly loosen and adjust the back panel so it fits better. That solved some issues I had with slanting or wobbling.
Wishing you all a shelf-friendly weekend! 🙂
