Hello everyone, I am about to assemble my new Ikea Besta cabinet and have the following question: What is the best way to build the Ikea BESTA system when you don’t have a second person to help?
I am specifically referring to the steps where large or heavy parts usually need to be held and connected. Are there any proven techniques, tools, or tricks to make this easier?
I don’t have much experience assembling furniture, but I do have some basic DIY skills and a few tools. Of course, I want to avoid damaging any parts and ensure the cabinet is stable and secure once assembled.
I would also appreciate recommendations on work steps to proceed as efficiently and carefully as possible. Thanks in advance for any helpful advice!

Good morning!
Another approach is to assemble the parts lying flat on the floor instead of mounting them upright. The Besta construction method partially allows screwing parts together in a horizontal position, which makes it easier to hold the components by yourself.
Here are some tips for this:
- Place the side panels flat on the floor with the outer side facing down.
- Start by assembling the back panel and secure it loosely.
- Then insert the shelves or intermediate boards; this keeps everything stable.
- Only at the end, stand the cabinet upright.
This reduces the effort needed to hold the parts and frees both hands for screwing.

I suggest breaking the assembly into small tasks. Replace the usual “hold moments” by temporarily using supports like sturdy stacks of books or small boxes as rests. This way, it changes from “I have to hold everything” to “I’m managing smartly.”
Take your time, keep a coffee nearby, and allow yourself breaks—working on an IKEA project alone will really build a strong connection between you and your furniture in the end.

Another useful tool I often use is low-profile or small furniture dollies that help maneuver the elements into position without needing extra hands. This is an important tip that might be overlooked at first. Especially large panels of the BESTA elements can easily tip over or fall depending on the room size and floor covering. Sliding small furniture dollies under the panels allows you to maneuver flexibly without constant lifting.
For those assembling alone, I would add: Set up a designated spot for your tools so you don’t have to keep getting up – it saves frustration.
And finally: Do you have a cordless screwdriver with adjustable torque? If yes, use it for better results, as this helps prevent over-tightening. When working alone, this significantly reduces potential mistakes.
