Hello everyone,

I own several MALM furniture pieces from IKEA, which I really appreciate, but I am concerned about the long-term effects of UV exposure on the surfaces. Especially the painted parts and veneered surfaces could fade or yellow from direct sunlight, which would affect their appearance.

Therefore, my question is: How can MALM furniture be effectively protected from UV light without compromising their look or functionality? Are there proven methods, special products, or home remedies that are suitable to prevent discoloration and material degradation?

I look forward to your experience and well-founded advice!

The best protection for MALM furniture against UV light is generally to minimize direct sunlight exposure. Window films with UV protection or curtains can be very helpful.

Additionally, I recommend placing the furniture close to the wall to reduce the amount of light reaching it.

There are also special furniture care products with UV filters for the surface, which are applied in a thin layer and slow down fading. However, when using these on MALM models with lacquered surfaces, be careful and follow the product instructions closely to avoid any damage.

Apply UV protective film to the windows. Keep curtains closed during the day. Wipe down furniture and maintain with furniture polish.

I think it makes sense not only to rely on protective measures like films or covers but also to consider the materials and their properties.

MALM furniture is often made from wood-based panels with a film coating that responds differently to mechanical stress and UV damage. Regular maintenance using mild products can help; however, many care products are not designed for film surfaces and might reduce the gloss or even have a slight corrosive effect on the surface.

Additionally, it should be noted that even UV-protective films usually block only part of the UV radiation and lose their effectiveness over time. A better approach is a combination of light reduction, appropriate interior design, and maintenance.

How do you handle long-term care?

Hey, a practical tip: I applied a well-adhering UV protection film to the window behind a MALM sideboard and occasionally placed light fabric covers on it when I’m away for extended periods.

The combination of blocking the sun and covering has worked really well so far! The furniture remains in excellent condition, with no fading or cracks 👍.

And yes, wiping it down occasionally with a dry cloth is usually enough. Avoid using harsh cleaners, as they can damage the surfaces. 🙂

As a supplement: According to studies on the aging of furniture surfaces, UV radiation can promote chipping and discoloration in veneered MDF or particleboard.

Therefore, the following measures are recommended:

1. Use of UV-filtering window films with at least 99% UV block.
2. Room design to avoid direct sunlight on furniture, for example, by placing items outside direct light paths.
3. Use of furniture care products specifically formulated for painted and veneered surfaces that include UV protection.

Regular inspection and cleaning are essential to prevent dust and abrasion, which can accelerate degradation of UV-sensitive layers.

Cheap or poorly adhering care products should be avoided, as they can damage the surface or are not resistant to UV exposure.
