Hello everyone,

I recently bought an IKEA Hemnes sideboard to increase my storage space in the living room. However, I am not yet fully satisfied with how efficiently the storage space is being used, as the layout of the drawers and compartments doesn’t seem optimal to me. My question to you is: How can the storage space in the IKEA Hemnes unit be organized more efficiently to make the best use of the available space? I am especially interested in tips for using boxes, dividers, or special organizers that are both practical and easy to implement.

Do you have any experience with better organizing the space in the drawers and compartments or ideas on how to customize the storage? I would appreciate concrete suggestions and possibly advice on common pitfalls, so I can find a sustainable and flexible solution.

Thanks in advance!

Hey, great question! 😊

I find the HEMNES series really practical, but sometimes the drawer space isn’t used optimally when you just throw everything in. My advice: invest in various sizes of storage boxes or small baskets – they really help keep everything nicely organized and prevent cable clutter or a mix of random items in the drawer.

And very important: assign zones to the drawers! For example, one drawer just for electronic accessories, one for documents/papers, one for small items, etc., so you always know where everything is.

If you’re handy, you can also add dividers made of thin wood or acrylic inside to better separate the areas and prevent things from sliding around.

In short: organized systems are the way to go! Have fun getting creative! 😉

Good morning,

I would like to offer a structured approach to make the storage space in the IKEA HEMNES more efficient. First of all: The sideboard drawers are usually quite deep, which provides a lot of volume but also poses the risk that items get lost at the back. Therefore, I recommend the following steps:

- Start by taking inventory of your items: What will go inside, and what sizes and shapes do they have?
- Then choose appropriate inserts or custom-built dividers that prevent small parts from mixing up or products from sliding to the back.
- Use plastic boxes or stackable baskets to better utilize the vertical space while also making access easier.
- Make sure that the dividers are not too tall, so the drawer can still close properly.
- For the sideboard compartments, a mix of bins and document holders works well; finally, label everything to keep track over time.

A common mistake is leaving drawers empty and not dividing the storage space into zones – this usually leads to clutter and wasted time. If you like, I can provide a simple sketch or example measurements for dividers.

In summary: Planning + suitable inserts = efficient storage space.

Hey, that’s right on point! 🙌

I really like how zoning works. For me, it turned out that using simple tricks like small containers or even magnetic clips—for example, to hold keys or small items in the HEMNES drawers—helps bring a lot more order.

Plus, this kind of organization makes daily life much more relaxing because you don’t have to search forever. It really motivates you to keep it up and adjust the space whenever your needs change.

I’d recommend just getting started; it’s fun, and you immediately feel more comfortable in your own home! 😊✨
