Hello everyone,

I have a rather specific question about protecting IKEA Hemnes furniture from moisture. Since the Hemnes series is often made of solid pine wood with a lacquer finish, I’m concerned about how prolonged exposure to moisture might affect the furniture, especially when placed in slightly more humid rooms.

I am particularly interested in effective measures to prevent damage from moisture—both from direct wetness and high indoor humidity. Are there any specific care products, varnishes, or sealants that you would recommend?

Also, how can the wood be preserved preventively without damaging the surface or significantly changing its appearance?

I look forward to your tips and experiences! Thanks in advance.

Hello Kuma1,

your question is very well formulated and addresses a crucial point regarding wooden furniture in damp rooms. Hemnes furniture is indeed quite sturdy, but natural wood is sensitive to moisture.

Basically, you should ensure that any direct wetness is wiped off immediately and that the furniture is not exposed to moisture on a long-term basis. For maintenance, there are special wood oils or waxes that create an additional protective layer without affecting the appearance.

A clear wood varnish could also help if you want to preserve the furniture a bit more. It is important to lightly sand the surface beforehand so the varnish adheres well.

To prevent issues, I also recommend monitoring the humidity in the room, for example with a hygrometer. Ideally, it should be between 40 and 60 percent.

If you are uncertain about treating the furniture, you can test on an inconspicuous spot first.

Hemnes furniture should be kept dry and regularly aired in conditions of high humidity.

A thin coat of wood oil or varnish provides good protection.

Wipe off any direct moisture immediately, otherwise the wood will swell.

I find that very helpful, especially because it allows you to preserve the natural look. I have some Hemnes furniture in my kitchen myself, which is quite exposed to cooking fumes and moisture.

Sometimes it can be a bit frustrating to see small changes caused by moisture. That’s why I often consider whether it would make sense to apply a thin sealant.

But I’ve heard that some varnishes can make the surface look unattractive very quickly if they are not applied perfectly. What are your experiences with this?

I really appreciate the exchange here because it shows that many have similar concerns and that small tips can prevent major damage.

Avoid direct contact with water; this is the most important thing.

For wet rooms, you can also protect furniture with water-resistant wood varnish.

Regular ventilation reduces condensation and protects the furniture.

I would recommend treating Hemnes furniture on the underside and edges with clear varnish. This protects the wood from rising moisture.

Additionally, felt or rubber pads can be placed underneath to prevent moisture from being absorbed from the floor.

These measures are inexpensive and easy to implement, and they significantly extend the lifespan of the furniture.
