Hello everyone,
I am considering how to convert IKEA Hemnes furniture into a guest bed, as I don’t want to have a separate bed just for guests. The HEMNES bed frame is quite solid, but I’m wondering if, for example, one of the dressers or bed frames could be repurposed to serve as a quick and stable guest bed—perhaps with an additional sleeping surface or folding mechanism. Does anyone have experience or ideas on how to modify the furniture so it can be used as regular furniture during the day and function as a guest bed at night? I look forward to suggestions, preferably with instructions or advice on the necessary materials. Thanks!

That sounds like a really smart plan!
A small addition – what I really like is a thick folding mattress that you can also use as a comfortable sofa when there are no guests. Just place it on the Hemnes bed, add a few nice cushions, and you have a great relaxation corner.
And when visitors arrive, just unfold the mattress and you have a comfy sleeping area ready. This way, everything stays flexible and the room can be used in many different ways.
Just my two cents, but this kind of solution is always a lot of fun!

Briefly, my idea is to take the HEMNES bed frame, install a plywood board about 20 mm (0.8 inches) thick as a substitute for the slatted frame, and place a narrow folding mattress on top. Protect the board with felt strips at the contact points. This way, the structure remains stable and easy to handle.
Thank you all for the valuable tips! To summarize, I will use the bed frame with a sturdy plywood board and place a folding mattress on top. I will also consider smaller details like felt pads under the board and secure fastenings for easy removal.
I really like the idea of using the mattress with cushions as a seating bench during the day! It saves space and is practical.
If anyone has further advice on mattress selection (sleep quality, materials), I would appreciate it. Otherwise, I will update once I have tried the initial modifications. Thanks again!
