Hello everyone, I have a question regarding my Ikea Hemnes dresser, specifically the drawers: How can I equip the Hemnes drawers with smooth-running slides to make them open and close much more effortlessly? The original slides are quite basic and often not very quiet or smooth in operation. I am looking for a practical solution, ideally with standard or easily retrofittable slides that can be installed fairly easily without major modifications to the drawer or dresser. Has anyone had experience, tips, or recommendations on which slides might fit and the best way to proceed? I look forward to your feedback!

Soft-close feature, if desired. For me, the soft-close would also be a major comfort improvement. I used to have a Hemnes as well, and the original drawer slides really aren’t great. Sometimes they even creaked annoyingly or got stuck when closing. Upgrading to high-quality full-extension slides has saved a lot of daily stress.
However, I am also prepared for a bit of fiddling, especially because of the thin sides of the drawers. If you apply too much pressure when screwing in, the sides could warp. What has been your experience when doing this yourself, or do you know of alternative fixing methods besides screws?

If too much screw pressure is applied, the sides might warp. That is exactly an important question for me: how to fasten the screws without causing the wood to swell or crack. Could dowels or special mounting clips be used to reduce stress on the wood? I am also interested to know if there are recommended models that are neither too expensive nor too complicated to install. I imagine these rails are mainly available at hardware stores or furniture supply shops. If you know specific model names or numbers, that would be great.
In addition to RUNIKI:
- For thin drawer sides (under 2 cm (0.8 inches)), it is recommended to use insert nuts or metal threaded inserts to avoid damaging the wood and ensure a durable, secure hold for the screws.
- Another option is specialty screws with a Teflon coating, which facilitate insertion without splitting the wood.
- Nearly all common full-extension drawer slides of the 450 mm (approximately 45 cm / 18 inches) type with a load capacity of 30–50 kg (66–110 lbs) are suitable, for example from Häfele or Hettich. These manufacturers offer good quality and straightforward installation instructions for DIY enthusiasts.
- Before installation, it is advisable to level all parts with a spirit level and, if necessary, perform a test assembly.
If you like, I can also put together a short guide on installation using insert nuts.
