Hello everyone, I am currently exploring how to customize IKEA Hemnes drawers. I am particularly interested in the different ways to personally alter the appearance and functionality of the drawers without compromising their stability or mechanics. I am looking for specific ideas or practical experiences with modifications, color adjustments, or the use of additional accessories. It is important to me that these changes are visually appealing while also being as reversible as possible, in case they need to be undone later. Do you have any suggestions on the best approach, perhaps tips on materials or tools? I look forward to a lively exchange of experiences!

It is always necessary to check whether structure and load are affected by such modifications.

Exactly. It is not enough to just change the color and design. For example, if you completely remove the drawers, you should also inspect the hinges and slides to ensure they still function properly after the changes. One often overlooked aspect is moisture, especially when painting the drawers – using the wrong type of paint can easily damage the wood quality over time.

Thank you for the tips so far; they have been very helpful! I would like to add that I often store small items like cutlery and writing utensils in drawers, so I am considering whether there are practical dividers or inserts specifically designed for Hemnes drawers. Does anyone have experience with custom-made or DIY inserts that fit these drawers well and make optimal use of the space? I would also appreciate any advice on suitable materials for such inserts.

For cutlery and small items, simple wooden inserts are best. You can cut these yourself from plywood. They are durable, can be customized to size, and are easy to install – either placed loosely or fixed with double-sided tape. Alternatively, you can use various modular plastic boxes that can be rearranged flexibly.
