Hello everyone, I am currently exploring how to customize IKEA Hemnes drawers. I am particularly interested in the different ways to personally alter the appearance and functionality of the drawers without compromising their stability or mechanics. I am looking for specific ideas or practical experiences with modifications, color adjustments, or the use of additional accessories. It is important to me that these changes are visually appealing while also being as reversible as possible, in case they need to be undone later. Do you have any suggestions on the best approach, perhaps tips on materials or tools? I look forward to a lively exchange of experiences!

For the appearance, you can simply sand down the drawer fronts and repaint them. To increase storage space, organizer inserts are helpful. You don’t necessarily need to change anything else.

Oh, that sounds really exciting! Hemnes is already great, but with a bit of paint or new handles, it becomes much more personalized! I painted my drawers with matte lacquer and installed light leather handles – totally thrilled! Don’t hesitate, it’s really fun to do something like that yourself!

To customize the Hemnes drawers truly individually, it is best to approach the process in several steps. First, I recommend thoroughly sanding the existing surface, ideally with a grit of 120 to 180, to ensure good priming and adhesion of the new finish. Afterwards, you can work with high-quality acrylic or wood paints that are suitable for furniture.

For functional modifications, interior dividers or custom inserts made from plywood or acrylic are good options. For those more technically inclined, upgrading the drawers with soft-close fittings can significantly enhance both value and feel.

Warning: It is important not to exceed the load capacity of the drawers, for example by using overly heavy inserts or constant exposure to moisture. I’m happy to provide more details if you share exactly how you plan to use them.

I think that's too complicated. Why not simply remove a drawer completely and interpret it artistically? Who says furniture has to be preserved above all else? Of course, there are practical limits, but with filler, paint, and creativity, you can do much more with a Hemnes than just customize it – you can turn it into a genuine one-of-a-kind piece.

That sounds inspiring, but it should be more than just "art," especially when it comes to functionality. It is always important to check whether the structure and load-bearing capacity are affected by such modifications. What materials and techniques do you specifically recommend to ensure stability while maintaining individuality? This is particularly challenging for furniture like Hemnes, which is often subjected to heavy use.
