Hello everyone, I hope to find some helpful tips here in the forum: How can the popular IKEA Hemnes furniture be protected to remain as undamaged as possible during frequent moves?

I’m not just concerned about a single transport but about moving every 1-2 years, repeatedly disassembling, reassembling, and transporting the furniture. I want to avoid damage to screws, hinges, or the wood, as well as loss of stability. Which packaging methods, protective materials, or even structural modifications would you recommend to keep the Hemnes furniture durable in the long term?

Are there any proven tricks for disassembly that make reassembly easier and safer later on? And what’s the best way to protect surfaces and edges, especially when the furniture is regularly moved to different environments?

I appreciate any suggestions, including practical examples from your own moving experience.

Are there maybe clever systems or standardized packaging that make this easier?

Yes, you can use special screw organizers with lids that are labeled by section (e.g., "door bottom right"). Alternatively, magnetic trays can be used to temporarily hold and sort screws.

Another option is to add small markings to the part or screw during assembly, such as colored dots or labels, which helps to find the correct match more easily later on.

For protection itself, it is important to cushion heavy parts with blankets and then secure them with packing tape instead of using only plastic wrap. Plastic wrap can cause pressure marks, and adhesive residues left behind are difficult to remove afterwards.

Treat wooden surfaces with furniture wax or oil before transporting the furniture piece. This protects against moisture and minor scratches.

For transport, tape up windows and doors for protection or cover them with bubble wrap.

If you move frequently, try packing the Hemnes in something like "furniture clothes" – that is, use thick moving blankets; as tailored as a custom suit, but for your furniture.

It might sound a bit silly, but if the blanket is securely fastened, it reduces the chance of scratches and dents. Then, at your next move, your Hemnes will basically travel through life in style. Add a bit of humor to the mix, and the move becomes much easier!

This is a very practical tip. Additionally: a clearly organized checklist or a photo logbook taken during disassembly can save a lot of time later.

Furthermore, movable parts can be secured with furniture straps to prevent stress on hinges and joints during transport.

Of course, this does not replace careful handling, but when folded or packed, such measures help preserve durability.

A tip for the edges: Cut heating pipe insulation foam and fit it over the corners. It’s cost-effective and provides good protection against impacts.

Additionally, when packing the individual parts, always ensure good cushioning between the floors.

Thank you for the many detailed and sometimes encouraging contributions! To summarize, I take away:

- Careful sorting and labeling of screws using colored dots or tags
- Use of sturdy furniture blankets or thick moving blankets to protect surfaces
- Protection of corners with inexpensive foam materials, such as pipe insulation
- Documentation with photos, checklists, and a screw plan
- Use of furniture straps to secure items during transport

I will also consider treating the wooden surfaces before moving to protect them from moisture.

If anyone has tips on storing screws during stressful moving situations, please share!
