ᐅ How can Ikea Brimnes furniture be protected against moisture?

Hello everyone,

I recently purchased some furniture from the Ikea Brimnes series, which I find very visually appealing. However, I am concerned about moisture protection, as the room where the furniture will be placed occasionally experiences slightly higher humidity levels (no serious moisture issues, but for example, in winter or when airing out, there is sometimes increased condensation on the walls).

My question is: How can Ikea Brimnes furniture be protected from moisture without compromising the appearance or functionality?

Are there specific sealants, coatings, or perhaps simple tips for placement and maintenance that can help make the materials and construction more durable?

I would greatly appreciate it if you could share your experiences or recommendations.

Hi Fakin!

I have Brimnes furniture in my bathroom at home, and since I deliberately took a few precautions, nothing has swollen or been damaged so far:

- I treated the edges with clear furniture wax, which works really well and looks nice.
- The furniture feet sit on small felt pads that also leave a gap to the floor.
- Inside, I added ventilation slots to allow air circulation (I made small drill holes last year).

Sometimes just cleaning the inside instead of wiping it damp helps keep moisture levels lower.

That said, it’s still been fun—the furniture is a classic!

Seal edges with clear varnish or silicone.
Do not place directly on tiles or cold floors.
Ventilate regularly.

If the room is often damp, it also helps to place furniture on small plastic feet. This prevents direct contact with potentially damp floors.

Do you mean a transparent varnish that is applied with a brush? Is that effective on laminated surfaces, or could it peel off?

Transparent varnishes do not always adhere well to laminated surfaces. I would rather recommend using a suitable furniture oil or hard wax, as these provide a flexible protective layer that is less likely to crack or peel.

Great tips from you, parbau!

One small addition: If you use furniture in the bathroom, a dehumidifier can work wonders. This way, most damage can be prevented from the start.

Also, it’s great that you installed ventilation slots yourself – many people often forget about that.
