Hello everyone,

I have purchased the IKEA Besta system and want to make the doors childproof. My main concern is to prevent toddlers from easily opening the doors without permission, especially since electronic devices and sensitive items are stored inside. The doors should not be permanently locked, but remain easy for adults to open—ideally with a mechanism that children cannot figure out or bypass. Does anyone have a practical solution or instructions on how to effectively childproof Besta doors? I am thinking of special locks or technical aids that are not too obvious but reliable above all. Looking forward to your experiences and suggestions!

Hello Minklo,

First of all, that is a good and important question regarding child safety. When it comes to childproofing the IKEA BESTA doors, there are actually several practical options depending on how much effort you want to invest and how secure the locking needs to be.

- Mechanical child locks: There are special clips or locks designed to be mounted on the inside of the door. These prevent the door from opening without altering the door hardware. Keep in mind that some clips can be difficult to install if you want to avoid drilling.

- Magnetic child locks: These work with a special key that unlocks the magnetic mechanism. The advantage is that these systems remain invisible since the mechanism is inside and not visible on the door. However, the door thickness needs to be suitable; otherwise, the magnet won’t hold securely.

- Internal handle locks: You could also try securing the door handles with a small latch or clamp that only adults can remove. The downside here is that it is more visibly obvious.

One important point: check the door thickness on your BESTA model and whether the installation should be done from the outside or inside without damaging the furniture. If you like, you can also share photos or details of your furniture type, so I can recommend the most suitable products more specifically.

If you already have certain locks in mind or more specific requirements (e.g., opening angle or ease of use for adults), feel free to add that. This way, I can point out potential pitfalls more precisely.

Use magnetic child safety locks that are installed out of sight. They are reliable and easy for adults to open with the appropriate key.

Hey Minklo, I solved exactly the same problem! 😃 I used magnetic child safety locks for the BESTA doors and I'm really happy with them. They are hardly noticeable, and the kids really can't reach them! Simply unlock with a magnetic key that only adults have. Super practical and looks great – no straps or visible locks that spoil the design. Don’t give up, it’s definitely doable! Good luck!

That sounds really good! I completely understand how stressful it can be when children can reach things they shouldn’t. What’s especially nice is that the look is preserved while still feeling safe. Minklo, if you want, don’t worry: there’s always a solution, and you’ll surely find one that gives you peace of mind. Maybe you can share how it goes for you – I find exchanging experiences here really helpful.
