Hello everyone,
I am planning to install some IKEA Platsa furniture in my living room, but I find their appearance a bit too standard for my taste. Therefore, I am interested in exploring ways to customize the Platsa furniture visually. I am thinking about options to possibly change the color, combine them with other materials, or enhance the surfaces without affecting their functionality.
Has anyone had experience with painting, applying adhesive covers, or adding extra components such as handles or additional shelves? Which techniques are practical and durable for everyday use?
I would be very grateful for any tips, recommendations, or examples!

Definitely go for the painting work yourself! At first, I was worried about how durable it would be, but with high-quality acrylic paint and thorough preparation, my Platsa fronts have been looking great for two years now.
A small tip: sand lightly, degrease, and then apply thin layers either by spraying or using a fine roller.
New brass handles also add real style. This turns a standard piece of furniture into a genuine statement!

The easiest way to upgrade Platsa is with self-adhesive film (e.g., vinyl).I can confirm that. Using film is the fastest method, it looks good, and you can easily apply it to individual doors or side panels. Another advantage is that the furniture can be reversed if you want to redesign it later.
I would like to add to the discussion about visual modifications of IKEA Platsa furniture: Especially for furniture made from particleboard with a melamine foil surface, proper surface preparation is essential for achieving a good result when painting or applying film.
- Lightly sand the surface using fine-grit sandpaper (220 grit)
- Degrease, for example with isopropanol, to remove all residues
- Use a primer, if possible melamine-based, to improve paint adhesion
Additionally, replacing the feet with slimmer or higher alternatives can make the overall appearance look significantly more elegant.
Furniture also looks more professional when using custom handles that match the color scheme in material and color. Combining different surface textures (e.g., matte fronts with glossy handles) adds extra visual interest.
