Hello everyone,
I have a very small room available and would like to create as much storage space as possible without making it feel cramped. That’s why I’m particularly interested in furniture from the Ikea Hemnes series, as it seems sturdy and has a rather classic design.

My question is: How can I best use Ikea Hemnes furniture in a small room to maximize storage, while avoiding just simple shelves or cabinets? Are there practical combinations, specific pieces from the series, or clever layout tips you would recommend? I have about 10 square meters (108 square feet) available, which should function as both a bedroom and a workspace.

I look forward to many concrete tips and also to hearing about your experiences with using Hemnes furniture efficiently.

Hey Filofo,
great question! Some time ago, I had the chance to furnish a small home with Hemnes furniture, and I can only encourage you—there are really cool options!

What I find really brilliant are the Hemnes dressers. They’re not only decorative but also offer a lot of storage space in the drawers. This is especially great for the bedroom because you can neatly store clothes, documents, and small items.

Here I would recommend placing a Hemnes drawer bench under the window or along free walls—this way you often make use of space that would otherwise be wasted.

Also, you can combine the Hemnes desk with matching drawer units, giving you additional storage for folders and office supplies at your workspace. I personally also like the Hemnes loft-bed-style storage, meaning using a dresser unit under the bed, which is super practical!

Good luck—go for it, it’ll be great!

Hello Filofo,
Your question is very precise, thank you for that. Let’s approach the topic of Hemnes in a small room systematically:

First, you should consider what kind of storage you specifically need: Is it mainly clothing? Documents? Or perhaps electronic accessories? The Hemnes series covers several categories, so you can combine pieces cleverly.

A proven concept is vertical space utilization. Hemnes offers tall cabinets with a relatively narrow footprint, which is ideal for a small room. For example, the Hemnes wardrobe with several shelves and a clothes rail is very suitable if you want to hang clothing items neatly in addition to storing things.

Combine elements of different heights (e.g., dressers and cabinets) to use horizontal and vertical surfaces effectively. However, pay attention to the center of the room—you should not sacrifice ease of movement.

Another technique is using modular drawer units. Hemnes offers drawer bench modules that you can slide under beds or into niches. This way, you create multifunctional storage in a very small space.

Also, consider equipping the furniture doors with inside-door organizers or hooks to store small items.

One more question: How high are your ceilings? This might help decide whether to use additional wall shelves from the Hemnes series or rather prefer floor-level units.

Hello Filofo,

After reading your post, I would like to suggest a structured approach that might help you plan the Hemnes furniture in your small room:

First, a brief introduction: Hemnes furniture is sturdy and offers plenty of storage depending on the piece – but especially in small rooms, it’s important to pay attention to the dimensions to avoid restricting your movement.

1. Needs analysis: Write down exactly which types of items you want to store, such as clothing, books, or work materials.

2. Take measurements: Measure your room precisely, including windows, doors, and radiators.

3. Choose furniture: From the Hemnes series, dressers with multiple drawers are particularly suitable for clothes and small items. The Hemnes secretary desk is a smart addition for a compact workspace with storage compartments.

4. Use vertical space: Look for tall cabinets to place in corners or along walls to make the most of the room.

5. Multifunctionality: Incorporate drawer benches as seating with storage. The Hemnes bed with drawers underneath also offers dual functionality.

6. Tip: Use drawer organizers to better arrange the contents.

Don’t get discouraged—careful planning of small rooms can be very rewarding. If you need, I can also create sketches of example furniture layouts specifically considering the Hemnes series.

Good luck with your project!

I can really understand your situation, Filofo. Small rooms often feel cramped quickly, especially when you want to place furniture that offers a lot of storage space.

That’s true, I’ve had similar experiences: the dressers from the Hemnes series are real storage miracles. I had to learn that organization is key – without a well-thought-out system, the storage space quickly feels cluttered and the sense of tightness increases.

That especially helped me in the workspace, since I can store many small things like cables or writing tools there.

My tip: If you also use the room as a workspace, set specific times for tidying up and sorting out – visible clutter makes the room feel even smaller, no matter how clever the storage is.

I wish you the best of luck; it’s great that you’re giving this so much thought!
