Hello everyone, I recently bought some BILLY shelves from IKEA and want to place them in my living room on tiled floors. Unfortunately, the tiles are not completely level – there are small uneven spots and differences in grout lines, so the shelves wobble slightly when set up. Since the shelves are relatively tall and I have children at home, I don’t want to compromise on safety. My question: How can I securely and stably set up BILLY shelves on uneven tiled floors so they don’t tip or wobble? Are there special accessories, adjustable feet, or other methods that have proven effective? I look forward to your recommendations and experiences!

To stabilize the shelf on uneven tiled floors, there are a few key points to consider:

1. Leveling the unevenness: Start by measuring the height differences at the shelf feet. Use small shims or suitable furniture glides, which come in various thicknesses, to achieve precise height adjustment. Alternatively, adjustable furniture feet that can be fine-tuned by millimeters are also a good option.

2. Securing to the wall: For BILLY shelves, wall anchoring is very important—especially on uneven floors—because the back provides stability and prevents tipping. Be sure to use the included wall anchors, which work well on tiled walls, or opt for special plugs designed for tiles.

3. Anti-slip materials: Placing rubber or felt glides under the shelf feet can be helpful. Rubber, in particular, offers better grip on smooth tiles and further reduces the chance of tipping.

4. Check after assembly: After adjusting, test the shelf multiple times for stability, including under load. Make sure that no shear forces occur that could compromise the wall attachment despite the leveling.

If you like, you can tell me what type of tiles you have (ceramic, natural stone) and whether the wall is suitable for screws. This way, I can provide more targeted advice on fastening.

Use adjustable furniture glides under each shelf leg to compensate for uneven heights. Also, make sure to secure the shelf to the wall using the included brackets. This is the simplest and safest method.

An important addition: When working with tiled walls, try to position the plugs ideally in the grout lines or the underlying masonry to avoid damaging the tiles. Special hollow wall anchors or tile drill anchors are recommended here.

Building on that, I recommend measuring unevenness with a spirit level before purchasing adjustable glides. Small irregularities of 1–2 mm (0.04–0.08 inches) can often be compensated with felt glides, while larger differences usually require adjustable feet.

Additionally, it is important to ensure that the weight on the shelf is distributed as evenly as possible to avoid point loads on individual legs. This is especially important for multi-tiered BILLY shelves, as it affects overall stability.

Furthermore, on very uneven floors, attaching hanging back panels with diagonal braces can help stabilize the unit diagonally. Although the original BILLY back panels provide stability, additional reinforcement may be beneficial.
