Hello everyone,

I am considering retrofitting an IKEA Metod kitchen drawer with a soft-close system because my drawers close quite loudly and harshly. Unfortunately, I omitted this during the initial installation and now want to add it myself.

My question is: How can I retrofit an IKEA Metod kitchen drawer with soft-close dampers on my own? Are there compatible retrofit kits or instructions on how to install them properly and securely without damaging the drawer?

It is important for me to know which screws or mounting points I should use, whether I need to modify the drawer front or sides, and if the drawer should be completely removed during the process.

I look forward to any tips, experiences, or suggestions for alternatives that work well. Thank you in advance!

Hello Maemilie,

To retrofit an IKEA Metod kitchen drawer with a soft-close damping system, a structured approach is indeed recommended:

- First, remove the entire drawer from the cabinet frame to make all mounting points easily accessible.
- Although IKEA does not offer an official retrofit kit for soft-close on Metod, there are compatible third-party damping systems available that can be mounted on the sides.
- Important: The dampers are usually installed on the inside of the cabinet frame, not directly on the drawer. This way, the drawer mechanisms remain undamaged.
- Screws: Use the supplied screws or similar small chipboard screws, preferably in the existing holes or drillings, to avoid material damage or misalignment.
- Installation: Follow the damper’s instructions carefully; a tool for pre-drilling can help prevent splitting the wood.

In short: remove the drawer, clean the inside surfaces of the cabinet frame, mount the dampers with suitable screws, reinstall the drawer, and test it.

If you like, I can provide a step-by-step guide or mention common mistakes.

That’s exactly why I wonder if the entire design shouldn’t be reconsidered. Why doesn’t IKEA install these dampers as standard? Maybe because they prefer to address the drawer issue using different methods?

It would be smart to have a system designed completely differently—using another mechanism, different materials, or a sliding solution instead of dampers that need to be retrofitted.

In my view, retrofitting is a symptom of a larger design flaw that you either accept or actually redesign—and that becomes much more complex than just adding a screw here and there.

For that reason alone, I agree with you that when retrofitting, it’s better to use quality materials and a well-thought-out concept rather than just sticking a damper on randomly.

I would do it like this:

- Remove the drawer
- Buy a soft-close damper kit specifically designed for Metod models
- Install the dampers in the designated locations (usually on the inside of the carcass)
- Reinstall the drawer

That is usually all that is needed.

Hello Maemilie,

I can offer you more detailed advice based on my own experience, as I have gone through this process several times.

Retrofitting soft-close dampers to IKEA Metod kitchen drawers is definitely doable if you keep the following points in mind:

- Preparation: Completely remove the drawer and carefully check the side panels for any pre-drilled holes or thin plastic clips.
- Damper selection: Although IKEA does not offer official retrofit kits, some manufacturers have developed soft-close adapters specifically designed for Metod that can be easily clipped or screwed in. Make sure the dampers fit the drawer’s height and width.
- Mounting position: The dampers are usually installed on the inside of the kitchen cabinet, not on the drawer itself. This preserves the drawer mechanism and avoids later adjustments.
- Screw selection: Use the supplied screws if possible, or small wood screws (3–4 mm) to avoid damaging the MDF or particleboard material.
- Installation: After mounting the dampers, carefully insert the drawer and close it slowly several times to check the function.

Common mistakes include twisting the damper or screwing it in too deep, which can cause the material to split. If you take it step by step, retrofitting is a great way to significantly reduce kitchen noise.

I hope this information helps you.
