Hello everyone, I have a very specific question: How can I effectively and permanently protect my Ikea Platsa furniture from scratches caused by children? The furniture has a quite smooth and sensitive surface that quickly gets damaged, especially when small children play around or climb on the cabinets. I am mainly interested in practical and proven methods that do not compromise the function or appearance of the furniture. Perhaps someone knows about low-maintenance protective products, stickers, films, or other tricks that have proven to be durable and childproof? I look forward to your tips and experiences!

To be honest, I think the whole obsession with protecting furniture is a bit over the top. Children need to play and experience their environment, including bumps and edges. Sure, furniture can get scratched, but is that really such a big deal? No one has ever lived for long without scuffs and marks on used items. Besides, you can hardly expect 100% safety with small children. That always makes me a bit skeptical when people immediately start using covers and protective measures. Maybe it’s more useful to teach children early on what they are allowed to do and what they are not, instead of wrapping everything up?

That’s a good point, but in my apartment, I want to achieve a certain balance. On one hand, I want to learn how to raise my children and improve how they handle furniture; on the other hand, I need practical solutions that protect the furniture from excessive wear and tear, since these are expensive pieces.

Maybe protective measures can be seen as a complement rather than a substitute for upbringing—sort of an additional barrier.

I have been using a clear furniture film from a hardware store for some time now, which is pressed onto furniture. It is almost invisible and withstands some scratches. It is important that it is applied cleanly and without bubbles. I can recommend it.

A small tip: Furniture covers or blankets can also help protect particularly vulnerable areas. They are quick to apply and often easier to clean or replace than plastic sheets.
