Hello everyone,

I have a question that has been on my mind for some time: How can I prevent Ikea Besta furniture from becoming wobbly or unstable after a while?

I have assembled several Besta units in my living room, some wall-mounted and some freestanding. After a few months, the freestanding units in particular show slight instability, noticeable as wobbling. I have already tightened some screws, but that is not a permanent solution.

I am especially interested in any advice on which components or assembly points are most critical, and whether it is worth adding extra reinforcements or doing anything specific during assembly to ensure long-term stability.

I am not putting extraordinary weight on the furniture—just normal use with media devices, books, and decorative items.

Thanks in advance for your experiences and recommendations!

The most common cause is that the back panel was not properly screwed or fastened.

Always use all screws and pull the back panel tight. This significantly increases stability.

Additionally, I would recommend placing rubber pads or felt gliders under the furniture to compensate for minor floor unevenness.

Hello jape35,

to answer your question in more detail: Ikea BESTA furniture is modular and relatively straightforward in design, but this also means that stability often depends on correct assembly. Connecting the individual parts and securing the furniture to the wall are especially important factors.

If your furniture is freestanding, you should pay attention to the following:
- Always use all the supplied screws and wall plugs.
- Make sure to tighten the screws properly, not just snugly, but firmly without damaging the material.
- The back panel (usually a thin particleboard) plays a major role in stability. It needs to be tight and fully secured.
- For tall cabinets or shelving units, I recommend anchoring them to the wall even if they are freestanding – this prevents tipping hazards and increases long-term durability.
- Check whether the floor surface is level. An uneven floor can cause wobbling; here, adjustable furniture feet or suitable shims can help.

Finally, it makes sense to regularly check that screws remain tight and retighten if necessary. This noticeably extends the lifespan of your BESTA furniture.

I hope this helps!

This is a very important point. Often, the back panel is loosely attached or omitted entirely, which significantly reduces the torsional rigidity. The back panel essentially provides cross bracing and prevents the cabinets from twisting.

Furthermore, I would recommend using corner brackets or metal connectors for free-standing BESTA units to help strengthen the connections between individual parts. This has a noticeable effect on stiffness, especially for longer shelving units.

Additionally, it can sometimes be useful to add extra fixation points on the floor in certain places, such as a small clamp or a mounting plate, to prevent movement.

If you have carpentry tools available, you can also apply some wood glue in the existing furniture screw holes before inserting the screws – this binds the materials and improves holding strength.

The issue with screws becoming loose over time is likely due to natural stress and slight material fatigue. Therefore, it is a good idea to periodically check and tighten all fasteners.

Additionally, I would like to provide a structured overview of how to systematically prevent instability in BESTA furniture:

- Back panel installation: Attach the back panel continuously and without tension; even if the material is thin, it serves as a crucial diagonal brace.
- Wall mounting: For newer models, use the special mounting kits provided. These should be used even for freestanding units if the room allows.
- Screws / cam connectors: Use all supplied fasteners, not just the mandatory screws.
- Floor leveling: Use shims to level the furniture so the base remains completely flat.
- Additional reinforcements: Attach corner braces or small metal brackets on internal edges. Affordable metal materials from hardware stores can be helpful here.

These measures significantly improve long-term stability, especially for freestanding BESTA units, which otherwise tend to loosen over time due to use and movement.

This is an extremely valuable tip, as I have actually had some of the furniture standing without wall mounting for months.

I would also be interested to know how you handle tightening the screws: How often do you check the screws on your BESTA furniture, and how do you tell if a connection needs to be tightened for stability?

The advice about wood glue makes sense, but I wonder if it could cause problems when disassembling. Does anyone use wood glue for the connections or perhaps other clamps to improve stability?

Many thanks in advance for the numerous and very helpful responses so far.
