Hello everyone,
I am planning to modify my Ikea Malm furniture to make it more practical and better suited to my needs. Specifically, I have a Malm chest of drawers with four drawers, which doesn’t offer quite enough storage space for me. I am considering whether adding shelves or installing organizer systems inside could create more order and storage capacity. I am also thinking about whether removing the drawer fronts and converting the unit into open shelving might be useful.
I’m mainly interested in which modification options are practical and proven to work well in real use, without compromising stability or design too much. Who has experience and can offer tips on how to practically modify Malm furniture? I’m not looking for decoration advice; it’s really about practical alterations and ways to enhance usability.
Thanks in advance!

I’m curious about how you handled adjustments to custom dimensions, for example when adding an intermediate level at half height. That works great with custom-cut wooden panels! I covered mine with a laminate – it looks really great and appears professionally made :-)
I also think gluing mirror panels on the inside surfaces for more light is a brilliant idea!

What about the appearance? Who has experience not only with practical aspects but also with maintaining or even enhancing the typical Malm look?To preserve the original appearance, corner brackets that are installed on the inside without visible screws on the front side are suitable. Painting the installed shelves in the original color tone is advisable. This way, the uniformity is maintained and the piece of furniture continues to look seamless.

Does anyone know simple ways to install LED lighting in a Malm piece of furniture without having to do much drilling or cutting? The main goal is to provide subtle lighting and improve practicality.
Thank you!

For LED lighting, LED strips with a self-adhesive backing are more suitable. They are flat, flexible, and can be easily attached to smooth surfaces.
Installing them inside the furniture is usually sufficient. For the power connection, USB- or battery-operated options can be selected to avoid drilling holes.

These are reusable and allow flexible installation without modifying the furniture. For power supply, slim battery packs are advisable, which can be discreetly hidden.
