Hello everyone, I am planning a few DIY projects using IKEA Platsa components. Specifically, I want to modify the doors to achieve a unique style and improved functionality. I am particularly interested in options such as attaching handles, painting or applying adhesive coverings to the doors, as well as tips on how to customize the doors without affecting the mechanics or fit.

Who has experience working with and modifying PLATSA doors and can offer detailed advice on the best approach to achieve clean and durable results? Are there any special tools or materials you would recommend, and what mistakes should be avoided?

Hello Nasir54, your question is very important, especially since IKEA parts are often modified for DIY projects and PLATSA doors have some specific characteristics. Generally, PLATSA doors can be worked on quite well, but here are a few tips:

- When painting, it is recommended to lightly sand the doors beforehand, preferably with 220-grit sandpaper, to help the paint adhere properly. Use acrylic paint, as it is durable and wear-resistant.
- For applying films, PVC-based vinyl wraps work well, but make sure the surface is smooth and clean to avoid bubbles.
- When attaching handles, pay attention to the original drilling positions or carefully measure beforehand to ensure the doors close properly afterward.
- In terms of tools, a cordless drill with adjustable low torque, a good drill bit, and a small set of files will suffice.

Important: Avoid excessive trimming of the edges, as they are usually pre-fabricated and closely matched to the frame profile. Altering them can cause the door to no longer sit flush or to catch.

I hope this helps you for now! Feel free to ask again for more specific techniques.

Simply use matte or glossy spray paints, they hold up well. For handles, you can use the holes that are already provided, otherwise attach screws from the back through the doors. Make sure the door does not warp.

This is a very important point that I would like to add to:

When sanding the doors, make sure to roughen only the surface lightly without sanding down the edges or removing the entire topcoat, as this can cause unsightly visible damage.

I also recommend the following step-by-step procedure:

- Remove the door and clean it with a degreasing cleaner
- Lightly sand with 220-grit sandpaper
- Remove dust, preferably with a damp cloth or vacuum cleaner
- Apply primer (specifically for wood or MDF)
- After drying, lightly sand again with fine sandpaper (320-grit)
- Apply paint in thin layers to prevent runs
- Sanding between coats can improve the finish if applying multiple layers

When installing handles, be careful not to damage any pre-drilled holes for IKEA fittings. If drilling new holes, use a drill bit slightly smaller than the screws to avoid material loss.

Besides painting, you might also consider wallpaper remnants, veneer, or special films, but a thorough surface preparation is essential in these cases as well.

If you have any questions about specific steps, I am happy to help.

I would like to share my experience here because this process initially overwhelmed me. It’s easy to underestimate how much patience is needed when modifying the PLATSA doors.

That is exactly right. When I tried to file the edges thoroughly, the surface peeled off in some areas, and the door no longer fitted properly into the frame.

Another tip: When installing new handles, be sure to take your time to mark the drill holes precisely and do a test fit first. I once had a problem where the holes were too close to the edge, and the door wouldn’t close properly afterward, which caused me quite a bit of frustration.

Regarding paint choice, I also recommend doing small tests in hidden spots beforehand to see how the paint or veneer reacts on the surface.

I think it’s great that you are starting with careful planning and attention—that’s the best way. Good luck!

Hey Nasir54! I’m also currently in the middle of remodeling my PLATSA doors and can only say: It’s a lot of fun! 😊

What I find really helpful:
- Use colored painter’s tape to get clean edges when painting.
- For painting MDF doors, it’s best to use a 2K paint, which is very durable and leaves a great surface feel.
- When drilling for handles, I always use washers to distribute the pressure, which helps the door hold better.

A small mistake I made: I assembled the doors only after painting and had to file several times to make them fit – it’s better to take precise measurements beforehand!

So be brave, with patience and the right tools it works out great! Feel free to try matte and satin finishes, they look really elegant!

Good luck and feel free to share how it’s going for you!
