Hello everyone,
I have a somewhat specific question: How can I modify Ikea Besta furniture to make optimal use of a tight living space?
The situation: My living area is quite small, about 15 square meters (160 square feet) including the kitchen and dining area. I really like the BESTA series because of its modularity and many options, but the standard configurations are often too large or not flexible enough for my space constraints.
So, I’m mainly interested in how to adapt or repurpose the furniture to create more storage without overcrowding the room. What methods or modifications have you made that actually work? Are there clever tricks for cutting, altering, or creating new connections so the furniture can be used, for example, as a room divider or multifunctional unit?
I would also appreciate tips on materials, tools, and safe procedures for making these modifications. Thanks in advance!

Are there clever tricks for shortening, modifying, or creating new connections to use the furniture, for example, as room dividers or multifunctional pieces? In addition to the previous suggestions, the following has proven effective for multifunctional furniture in small spaces:
- Using hinge solutions that create foldable surfaces—such as a fold-out worktop attached to a Besta cabinet.
- Creating hidden storage areas with dual functions, for example, under seat cushions on a furniture bench.
- For room division, you can also attach elements to the ceiling using spacers, creating intermediate levels to save space.
These modifications require some DIY skills but are quite doable with good templates and planning.
If you like, I can also provide a preliminary sketch for integrating folding mechanisms into BESTA.
What are your DIY skills like? Do you have experience with light construction and woodworking? That would help to assess.
