Hello everyone, I have a Malm furniture set from Ikea, consisting of a dresser and two bedside tables, which I would like to use on my balcony. Unfortunately, these pieces are originally designed for indoor use, and I am concerned about moisture, UV exposure, and weather resistance. How can I make Malm furniture suitable for balcony use without it getting damaged quickly? I am interested in practical and durable solutions, such as surface treatments, protective measures, or special impregnations. Are there any experiences with painting or oiling that are effective? Thank you very much for your advice!
To protect Malm furniture on the balcony permanently, you should first sand the surface thoroughly to ensure that a protective coating adheres well. Painting with special exterior or marine varnishes is recommended, as they are resistant to UV radiation and moisture. Alternatively, acrylic or polyurethane paints provide good weather protection. It is also important not to place the furniture directly on the ground to avoid water retention. Regularly renewing the sealant significantly extends the lifespan.
The question is therefore mainly how to ensure durability through surface treatment and protective measures.

Two summers ago, I also used Malm dressers on my balcony, treating them with a combination of wood stain and a thick coat of clear weatherproof varnish. It worked really well! The important thing is not to leave the furniture constantly exposed to rain, so it’s best to use a tarp or a light canopy 🙂
Exactly, it’s better to rely on proven products—they are worth the price and save you trouble. Additionally, adding small rubber feet to the furniture helps prevent water from getting under the legs. This way, you can enjoy your outdoor furniture longer, even if it wasn’t originally designed for outdoor use 😉

The question of using Malm furniture on the balcony is quite interesting, as these pieces are made from veneered particleboard and are therefore very sensitive to moisture. To provide effective protection, the following steps are recommended:
1. Sand the furniture completely until the surface is clean and rough, allowing the protective coating to adhere well.
2. Apply a sealing layer, such as a wood primer, to prevent water from penetrating the particleboard.
3. Then use a high-quality, weather-resistant coating: two-component acrylic or polyurethane paints are advisable, as they remain flexible and are weatherproof.
It is also important to treat all edges and the backside, as these areas are particularly vulnerable to water infiltration. If you are skilled with DIY, you can additionally use silicone or acrylic sealants for the joints.
Question: How large is your balcony and how exposed is it to the weather? Is it shaded or in direct full sun? This would also influence the product recommendation.

I would like to add to the previous tips with a simple step-by-step guide for effectively weatherproofing Malm furniture:
1. Preparation: Thoroughly clean the furniture, remove any loose paint, and sand with a grit of 120-180.
2. Primer: Use a wood primer suitable for coated furniture or veneered particleboard to prevent moisture from penetrating the wood.
3. Sealing: Apply at least two coats of weather-resistant varnish, preferably products designed specifically for balcony or garden use.
4. Edges & backsides: Do not overlook these areas, as moisture damage often starts there!
5. Allow proper drying time: Depending on the product, wait 12-24 hours between coats.
A common mistake is neglecting the backside, which later causes blistering and swelling. I also recommend storing the furniture elevated (e.g., on wooden blocks) to avoid trapped moisture.
Good luck with your project! 🙂
