Hello everyone, I have a somewhat specific question about my Ikea Malm furniture set. I generally like the design, but the surface looks quite plain and lacks character. Especially after some time of use, you can see small scratches and signs of wear. So my question is: how can I make my Malm furniture look better without completely replacing or extensively restoring it? Are there practical and relatively affordable methods to enhance or visually improve the surface, such as with certain paints, films, or other materials? I’m looking forward to concrete tips or experiences on what has proven effective in practice. Thanks in advance!

Self-adhesive films with wood or stone patterns are the easiest option. They quickly give a fresh look. Alternatively, apply a matte clear coat, which provides protection and gives the surface a slightly duller finish – this helps to make small scratches less noticeable.

Hello, I would like to add a bit more detail. Malm furniture is usually made from particleboard with a melamine coating, so sanding or traditional staining is hardly possible without damaging the surface. In this case, using films or self-adhesive veneers is actually a great option, as they cover the surface completely and at the same time protect against scratches. A quality feature here is the film thickness – it should be sufficient so it doesn’t tear easily.

Additionally, you could try refreshing small scratches and dull spots with furniture wax. The wax doesn’t penetrate deeply but lightly polishes the surface and can already provide some minor visual improvements.

If you’re feeling experimental, you can also work with adhesion-promoting spray paints from a hardware store. It’s important to thoroughly clean the furniture first and lightly roughen the surface with fine sandpaper so the paint adheres better. Always consider ventilation and protective measures.

Have you thought about highlighting certain areas with color, for example drawer fronts or handles in a contrast color? This often creates a more modern and dynamic look.

Interesting question! Since Malm furniture is usually made from inexpensive particleboard with a melamine coating, the options for modification are somewhat limited.

That’s a good idea, but you need to ensure that the clear coat is compatible with melamine surfaces; otherwise, delamination can occur.

A more advanced approach is to use so-called “vinyl wraps” or “furniture wraps.” These are flexible, self-adhesive vinyl films specifically designed for furniture to completely change their appearance. Careful surface preparation (thorough cleaning and light sanding) is important to ensure the wrap adheres as long as possible.

Spray paint is an option, but keep in mind that melamine surfaces are not very absorbent. The risk of blotches or uneven results is quite high if you lack experience.

For best results, I also recommend disassembling the furniture pieces beforehand, so all edges and corners can be worked on cleanly. Also, using a primer can help improve the adhesion of the new coating.

What about adding decorative handles or small accessories? This can refresh the overall look without needing to work on the entire surface.
