Hello everyone,

I have several IKEA Billy bookcases at home, and I’ve noticed for some time now that they make quite a loud rattling noise when opening and closing the doors or when moving the shelves. This especially bothers me during quiet moments or in the evening.

My question to you: How can I make my Billy bookcases quieter? Are there any proven methods or tips to prevent the wood or metal fittings from creaking, cracking, or rattling? I have already considered felt pads, but maybe there are other effective solutions that not only reduce the noise but also extend the lifespan of the bookcases.

Does anyone have experience with this and can help me? Thanks in advance!

Hello Tuman,

It’s best to use felt pads or small rubber bumpers and attach them to the contact points of the cabinet doors and shelves. This will significantly reduce rattling.

You can also tighten the screws if they have become loose, which helps prevent vibrations.

Usually, that’s all you need.

Sure, that’s a good tip!

I know well how annoying rattling shelves can be. Especially when you want to read or relax in the evening but are disturbed by the noises.

Sometimes I manage to press the shelves more firmly against the wall so they wobble less. This doesn’t always reduce the noise, but it feels more stable and lessens the rattling sounds.

If anyone has more ideas – I’d love to learn more about easy and lasting solutions for this. 🙂

That’s brilliant!! 🙂

I used to hear my Billy shelves rattling whenever I pulled out books or closed the doors. What really helped me were additional self-adhesive silicone bumpers—those small semicircular pads you can find at hardware stores. Just stick them on the contact points of the doors, and bam – no more rattling!

Also, you can put small rubber rings on the height adjusters of the shelves so they don’t rest directly on hard wood and vibrate slightly. This really reduces noise.

Give that a try; it makes a difference! Good luck and keep us updated! 🙂
