Hello everyone, I recently bought a Billy bookcase from IKEA and am generally satisfied, but I find the doors quite loud when closing. This is especially annoying in an apartment, particularly when you have guests or it’s late in the evening. Now I would like to make the doors quieter afterward. I’m thinking about using dampers, felt strips, or other methods that can be installed without major modifications. Does anyone have experience with this or maybe a clever solution? It’s important to me that the doors still close properly and the appearance is not affected. Thanks in advance for your tips!

Felt strips placed where the door contacts the frame often help significantly. Alternatively, small silicone seals or self-adhesive furniture bumpers can be used. These are cost-effective and easy to install.

An effective way to reduce noise from cavity doors is to apply self-adhesive silicone or rubber bumpers. These reduce impact and noticeably dampen sound levels. Note: The surfaces where the bumpers are applied must be clean and free of grease to ensure proper adhesion. Another option is felt pads or strips, which can be attached precisely at the door contact points. Accurate positioning is important; otherwise, the doors may not close fully.

That may be true, but I wonder if this is just a temporary fix. Shouldn't we first investigate why the doors are making so much noise in the first place? Often, it’s due to installation issues, such as misaligned hinges or improper adjustment. Before applying dampers, it would be more effective to check and properly adjust the hinges to address the root cause of the noise.

Hello laphelan,

your reasoning is completely understandable, and you have already mentioned the key approaches. I recommend first checking the door hinges and adjusting them if necessary. This reduces friction and misalignment, which often cause loud closing noises.

After that, you can apply felt strips at the contact points; this cushions the impact pleasantly without significantly affecting the appearance. Self-adhesive silicone bumpers are even less noticeable during installation and provide long-lasting cushioning. If you are handy, you could also retrofit hinges with built-in dampers.

Try the combination of adjustment and cushioning, as this is usually the best solution for Billy doors. If you find it too complicated, feel free to reach out again, and I can provide more detailed instructions.

Oh, this topic is great! I had the same problem and after a long search discovered the secret: "soft-close" cabinet hinge adapters! Just replace the old hinges with these adapters and voilà – no more loud doors!

This is brilliant! 🙂 Installation is very easy, and opening and closing feels really smooth and premium. If you don’t want to replace the entire hinges, there are also small dampers that can be clipped on.

Good luck, it’s definitely worth it! Your guests will thank you! :-)
