Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to install several IKEA Billy bookcases in my apartment, but I have small children at home and want to make sure the units are truly child-safe. My main question is: How can I fix and secure the Billy bookcases so that they cannot tip over or be opened or knocked over unintentionally by children?

It is important for me to have the right anchoring to the wall as well as possible additional measures to prevent toddlers from opening the cabinet doors or climbing on hazardous areas. Are there specific safety systems you would recommend? Should I purchase certain fasteners separately, or is the wall mounting hardware supplied by IKEA sufficient?

If anyone has tips on suitable screws, wall plugs, or childproof locks, I would be very grateful. Also, advice on which wall types (concrete, drywall/plasterboard, etc.) require special attention would be very helpful.

Thanks in advance!

The most basic and safest measure is secure wall anchoring using appropriate anchors depending on the wall type – for concrete, for example, expansion anchors; for drywall, special drywall anchors or, better yet, installing reinforcement behind the wall.

In addition to wall mounting, child safety features such as lockable cabinet doors or special childproof locks are recommended to make opening the doors more difficult. Some parents also use furniture connectors to join several Billy shelves together, which increases stability.

It is important that the installation is carried out professionally and that all screws are tightly secured. Another point is to place the heaviest items on the lowest shelves to further reduce the risk of tipping.

In addition to the points already mentioned, please consider the following precautions:

1. Wall Mounting: Always use the wall fasteners supplied by IKEA and add additional anchors if your wall material requires special plugs. For drywall (plasterboard) walls, it is recommended to mount the shelves on wall studs or use heavy-duty anchors.

2. Anti-Tip Connection: Multiple shelves can be securely connected using connector elements, which increases the overall stability of the unit.

3. Child Safety for Doors and Drawers: There are special child safety locks made of plastic or metal that can be discreetly installed to prevent accidental opening.

4. Placement: Avoid placing the shelves on slippery carpets; instead, position them on a solid, stable surface.

5. Avoid Climbing Aids: Make sure there are no furniture pieces or objects nearby that children could use to climb onto the shelves and potentially tip them over.

Combining these measures significantly reduces the risk of accidents.

Mount them using the IKEA wall brackets, use suitable wall anchors for your wall type, secure the doors with child safety locks from a hardware store, and connect multiple units together for added stability.
