Hello everyone, I have a question that has been on my mind for a while: How can I reliably identify damaged Malm drawer frames? I have Malm dressers from Ikea, and sometimes there are invisible damages that only become apparent later, such as cracks or material fatigue. I’m especially interested in any signs to look for when inspecting the drawer frames without completely disassembling them. Are there typical features or deformations that indicate a defect? And how can I check if the stability is still sufficient? I look forward to your tips and experiences!

Older Malm models often have vulnerable edges because they are covered with thin veneer. Pressure marks or chipped parts are typical issues. Newer models usually have reinforced edges but are not indestructible. If the frame is wobbly or cracks are clearly visible, it is better to replace it rather than just glue it.

That’s interesting, because I have often heard that the connection between the frame and side panels of Malm is prone to problems. However, the overall durability depends greatly on the materials used and the quality of workmanship. One question is whether there have been documented product variations with different quality levels. Otherwise, it would be reasonable to systematically rule out causes of wear such as moisture or overloading.

In addition to the previous discussion: When inspecting damaged Malm drawer frames, I recommend checking not only the visible parts but also the drawer slides – wear or deformation often appears here early on. A smooth yet precise movement is a good indicator of intact frames. If the wood at the contact points with the sliding rail shows cracks or swollen areas, this could indicate moisture damage. For everyday use, this means: if you suspect hidden defects, carefully test all drawer movements before risking further damage.

Hello everyone! 🙂 Based on my experience with Malm door frames, they are quite sturdy, but it’s still a good idea to check them carefully from time to time. I find it especially interesting how often small DIY fixes (glue or wood filler) can work wonders once you have thoroughly inspected the frame. It’s important, especially with older furniture, not to pull the drawers roughly, as this speeds up wear and tear. My advice: listen carefully if the frame makes unusual noises or if the drawer feels odd—these warning signs shouldn’t be ignored. 🙂

That’s an interesting point! So far, I haven’t found any official information indicating that Ikea has changed the Malm series over the years. Would it be possible to distinguish such variants based on production codes or assembly instructions? If so, I could specifically search for replacement parts or repair methods. The tip about moisture damage was also helpful—this is often an issue in older apartments. Thanks for the input!
