Hello everyone,

I recently assembled several Malm furniture pieces from IKEA and noticed that the assembly can be quite challenging—at least if you don’t pay attention to certain common pitfalls. Therefore, I’m interested in hearing if you have experienced typical issues when putting together Malm furniture. I’m not only referring to missing parts or incorrectly placed screws but also to any design-related difficulties that might unnecessarily complicate assembly or affect the stability of the furniture.

Maybe someone is familiar with problems related to the assembly instructions, the fit of the components, or common scenarios where mistakes tend to happen. I look forward to your opinions and tips!

One more question for you, KINZAR: Which exact steps did you find particularly prone to errors?

Thank you for the detailed insights; that matches my experience exactly. Specifically, I had trouble with the drawer slides: although the instructions show how to attach them, the small plastic parts and screws are hard to identify. As a result, I initially installed them upside down, which only became apparent when the drawer started sticking.

Also, when connecting the side panels to the back panel, I overtightened the screws on the first try, which made it difficult to properly adjust the cam dowels later when inserting the shelves.

Do you have any specific tips for these issues? How can drawer slides be mounted securely without risking incorrect installation?

Looking forward to your ideas.

Drawer slides can be really tricky, especially because the small plastic clips sometimes seem like little gremlins.

My tip: First, position all the parts without screws and carefully check how they fit together. Then slowly screw in each screw one by one, checking in between to make sure the drawer moves freely.

And honestly, a bit of patience is the best friend for anyone assembling Malm furniture. 🙂

I can confirm that. Although MALM has a large product range, the instructions hardly seem adjusted to the many different variants. This increases the risk of assembling the wrong parts.

Additionally, a specific point of criticism: the fit of some particleboard pieces could be improved. In my case, sometimes 1–2 millimeters (0.04–0.08 inches) were missing, or parts were warped, which made assembly difficult.

This is especially critical with the floor-standing components, as stability suffers without a perfect fit. It would be interesting to know if others have experienced the same.

This is an important point. Particle boards swell when exposed to moisture, which should especially be considered in damp rooms. Store the components in a dry room before assembly and avoid keeping them in basements or bathrooms, as this can help prevent swelling.

Regarding the plastic clips on the drawer slides: make sure they click lightly when engaged. Sometimes it feels like they are secured, but they are actually just resting loosely.

A tip for error-free work:

- Review the instructions carefully and mentally go through all steps
- Ensure adequate lighting
- Sort screws and parts by size and type
- Always check the drawer play before final fastening

This should reduce problems. Good luck!

In short: precise fit, the risk of mixing up screws, and the correct use of the small plastic holders are the main sources of errors.

Those who pay close attention to detail and work step by step can usually avoid mistakes.
