Hello everyone, I have a question that has been on my mind for a while: How can I reliably identify damaged Malm drawer frames? I have Malm dressers from Ikea, and sometimes there are invisible damages that only become apparent later, such as cracks or material fatigue. I’m especially interested in any signs to look for when inspecting the drawer frames without completely disassembling them. Are there typical features or deformations that indicate a defect? And how can I check if the stability is still sufficient? I look forward to your tips and experiences!

Hello! First, check the surface of the door frames for cracks or deformations. Then test the connection points to see if they are still firmly secured. If the frame wobbles or moves slightly, this is usually a sign of damage.

Hello Lauke3, your question is very well asked! Malm frames can indeed have subtle damage. Usually, broken frames can be identified if the drawer no longer slides smoothly or if the dresser feels unstable when touched. Pay special attention to delaminated edges – that means the surface coating is peeling off – and to joints that are no longer flush. If you hear or feel a crack when gently pressing towards the side panel, this indicates material fatigue.

Great that you bring up this topic! 🙂 In my case, I noticed small cracks at the bottom edge of the frame that I hadn’t seen before. Especially with older models, it’s important to check the metal brackets as well to make sure they aren’t bent or loose. A little tip: use a flashlight and hold it at an angle against the frame, as this often makes scratches or cracks easier to spot. Good luck!

That is correct. Additionally, a functional test is recommended: pull the drawer out several times and check if it sticks or feels warped. A damaged frame can also cause audible creaking noises. It is also advisable to visually inspect the fasteners, as screws can loosen and affect stability.

Thank you in advance for the advice! I’m also curious whether there are noticeable differences between older and newer versions of Malm frames. Are there any known weak points that tend to break easily? On the internet, there are quite a few reports of issues with wood-based panels and veneer, which are said to be difficult to spot. Additionally, how durable are the frames in general once they are slightly damaged? I want to assess whether repairs are worth it or if replacement is the better option.
