Renalber5622 Nov 2019 17:43Hello everyone,
I am planning to replace the doors on my IKEA PLATSA cabinet because some of them are damaged, and I want to refresh the look a bit. My question is: How can I replace IKEA PLATSA doors easily and with as little use of tools as possible?
I have already partially disassembled the cabinet, but I’m not exactly sure how to safely remove the doors without causing any damage. It would also be helpful to get advice on which tools are specifically needed, the best way to rehang the doors, and what pitfalls I should avoid. Ideally, I want to make the process as straightforward as possible without risking additional damage to the cabinet body.
Who has experience with replacing PLATSA doors, especially regarding the required tools and techniques? Thanks in advance for your tips!

- Tools: Phillips screwdriver, possibly an Allen key (sometimes tools are included).
- To remove the doors, first loosen the hinges. These are attached to both the cabinet frame and the door with screws.
- Loosen the screws on the door side, not on the cabinet frame, to lift the door off without removing the brackets.
- Carefully lift the door and set it aside.
- Installing the new door is done in reverse: position the door, then secure the hinges with screws.
Make sure the hinges are properly aligned to ensure the door sits flush and moves smoothly. It is advisable to check all fittings again after installation. To avoid injuries and damage, work carefully and in a controlled manner. If you cannot find replacement parts at IKEA, it may be worth looking into compatible alternatives.
This method applies generally to common PLATSA models but may vary slightly depending on the version.

Replacing IKEA PLATSA doors is generally straightforward if you know the mechanism.I’m happy to add some detailed tips from my experience:
First, you should know the exact type of your PLATSA cabinet, as IKEA uses different hinge and door models. The doors are usually held in place by clips or screws:
- Step 1: Fully open the door.
- Step 2: If a clip mechanism is used, you’ll find small levers or pressure points on the hinges that you can gently release with a flat-head screwdriver.
- Step 3: For screw hinges, loosen the screws on the door side, not on the cabinet frame, so the mounting brackets stay attached.
- Step 4: The door can then be carefully lifted off. Important: Do not pull abruptly to avoid damaging the hinges.
Patience is key when reinstalling. You’ll need some finesse to align the door correctly. Use a screwdriver that fits the screws well to prevent slipping. Small adjustments on the hinges help level the door perfectly.
If the doors have become stiff after prolonged use, a drop of lubricant on the hinges can work wonders.
How are your existing hinges? Soft-close hinges (for example with damping) are usually easier to install, while standard hinges are generally sturdier and less vulnerable.
What kind of doors are you planning to install (wood, coated, glass)? Sometimes this also changes the mounting points.
If you like, I can provide a step-by-step guide with descriptions, of course without photos here.

stefangla23 Nov 2019 20:47I would like to add to this thread with a more practical approach, including common mistakes and tips:
- Preparation: Clear your workspace and gather all necessary tools (Phillips screwdriver, possibly an Allen key, small flathead screwdriver for clips).
- Before removing the door, take a close look at how it is attached. With PLATSA, it often uses so-called clip hinges that can be released by prying.
- Tip: Carefully hook a thin flathead screwdriver onto the edge of the clip and gently lever it. Applying force is counterproductive.
- If the door is tight and difficult to remove, check if there are still screws on the cabinet frame that need to be undone first.
After removal:
- Compare the new doors to the old ones regarding hinge positions to avoid misalignment.
- If the new doors are still unmodified, check the hinge and drilling measurements carefully—pre-drilled holes are often positioned differently.
During installation:
- First, correctly insert the hinges into the receptacles on the cabinet frame.
- Make sure the door is flush at the top and bottom.
- After tightening the screws, small adjustments can be made at the hinges to align the door properly.
A common mistake: not tightening the screws enough, causing the doors to hang crooked or rattle.
If your doors have handles, check their positions before installation to avoid unnecessary drilling later on.
Finally, I recommend lightly lubricating the hinges after installation to increase their lifespan and improve ease of use.
I hope this helps—feel free to ask if anything is unclear!
