I would like to refurbish my Ikea Metod kitchen fronts myself using adhesive film and have some questions: What are the best materials and types of film to achieve a durable and visually appealing surface? How should I prepare the fronts to ensure good adhesion and avoid air bubbles or wrinkles? Are there any special tips for cutting and applying the film, especially around the handle recesses? I look forward to practical advice, as I want to carry out the project without professional help and am seeking reliable recommendations.

For upgrading IKEA Metod kitchen fronts with adhesive film, I recommend the following approach:

- Use self-adhesive PVC film designed specifically for furniture, available with either a matte or glossy finish, depending on the desired look.
- Thoroughly clean the fronts before application to remove dust, grease, and residues. Isopropyl alcohol or specialized cleaning wipes work best.
- Applying the film on smooth surfaces is relatively easy, but for handle recesses, precise cutting with a sharp utility knife is advised.
- To prevent air bubbles, use a squeegee or a similar flat tool to smooth the film from the center outwards toward the edges.
- After applying, let the film rest for at least 24 hours before using the kitchen.

These steps are essential to achieve a professional finish.

The best film is self-adhesive PVC with a matte or glossy finish.

Clean surfaces beforehand with alcohol.

Smooth the film with a squeegee.

Cut out recesses for handles separately.

I think it’s great that you’re confident to do it yourself! I had a similar experience and was initially concerned about the handle recesses. What helped me was having a lot of patience when cutting and constantly checking to make sure everything fits before firmly sticking it down. And if you get an air bubble, just carefully prick it with a needle and press the air out. You’ll definitely manage!

As an additional tip: it is advisable to use a plastic squeegee, as it will not damage the film. Some DIYers also use a credit card or a similar hard, smooth object if no squeegee is available.

This is a practical method to remove bubbles, provided the film was applied correctly. Nevertheless, it is best to try to avoid air bubbles from the start by applying the film gradually while working with the squeegee.

Wow, remodeling like this is really fun! I upgraded my Metod fronts with adhesive film and can only recommend setting aside some time for it. A warm room works best, as the film is easier to apply. For the handle grooves, I used small scissors, which made the detailed work much easier.

Also, an important tip: don’t rush! Take your time with each step and work carefully, so the result looks great and lasts longer. I was really surprised by how much fresher the kitchen looks afterward. Good luck to everyone who’s willing to give it a try!
