Hello everyone,

I have owned an Ikea Besta shelving system for some time now and am generally very satisfied with the dimensions and functionality. However, I would like to customize the fronts in a more individual and creative way, as the standard fronts are functional but look a bit plain to me.

I am particularly interested in techniques and materials to modify or enhance the fronts – whether through paint, films, laminates, stickers, decorations, or even upcycling methods.

It would also be helpful to know which tools are useful for this, what preparations are necessary (e.g., surface treatment), and if anyone has experience with especially durable or especially creative results.

How can I personalize the fronts of Ikea Besta without compromising quality or durability? I’m really looking forward to your tips and ideas!

Hello everyone,

When discussing custom design for Ikea Besta fronts, it’s important to consider not only the appearance but also the practical use and durability.

A step-by-step suggestion:

- Gently clean and degrease the fronts
- Lightly sand with fine sandpaper (min. 220, max. 320 grit)
- Thoroughly remove dust (e.g., with compressed air and a microfiber cloth)
- Apply a primer (specifically for melamine surfaces, such as an adhesion primer)
- Allow the primer to dry
- Apply a high-quality paint (acrylic or polyurethane-based), several thin layers with sanding between coats
- Alternatively: cover with high-quality furniture vinyl using a squeegee to remove bubbles
- Then protect with a clear coat, especially when applying color

Important: This process ensures that your applied finish lasts a long time and is resistant to wear and moisture.

How is your indoor climate? Is it humid or rather dry? This can also influence the choice of materials.

- Are your Besta fronts originally matte or glossy?
- Do you have any experience working with paints or laminates?
- Do you have specific design preferences, such as minimalist, vintage, or colorful?

Good questions!

The fronts are matte, so no high-gloss finish. I don’t have much experience with painting, but in the past, I have prepared furniture pieces with primer and then painted them, though mostly small surfaces. I have no experience with laminates so far.

My design preference leans toward a modern look, preferably minimalist, but with accents in the form of color blocks or clear geometric patterns. Vintage is not really my style. It is also important to me that it remains durable and easy to maintain, as I use the fronts regularly.

What do you think about combining painting and laminate applications? Or would it be better to stick to one approach consistently?

Hello Naguka,

From my experience, combining painting and vinyl wrapping is definitely possible, but it requires careful planning and execution.

If you paint first, the paint must be fully cured and free of grease or dust before applying the vinyl. Otherwise, the vinyl will not adhere well or may peel off after a short time.

Alternatively, you can paint the areas you don’t plan to wrap and apply vinyl only to other doors or panels. This way, you can create interesting contrasts without the processes interfering with each other.

For painting, I strongly recommend using a primer and applying several thin layers. Sanding lightly between coats with very fine sandpaper (400 grit) will result in a particularly smooth and even surface.

For vinyl wrapping, be sure to use a high-quality vinyl film that is flexible and scratch-resistant. The application works best with a squeegee and good lighting.

Important: Cut the edges of the vinyl cleanly to prevent unwanted peeling. When working on curved surfaces, avoid creating direct creases—instead, stretch carefully and use heat to adjust.

I hope these tips help you. Which tools do you already have available?
