Hello everyone,
I have an IKEA Besta sideboard with several drawers that I would like to childproof. My goal is to prevent my young children from easily opening the drawers, as they contain some fragile items and electrical devices that I want to keep out of reach.
So far, I am using the original BESTA hinges without any locking mechanism. I am looking for a simple but reliable method to childproof the drawers—preferably without major structural modifications or visible bulky locks.
Does anyone have practical experience or tips on which products or tricks might work? I am also open to more creative solutions that are not too invasive and do not significantly affect the design.
Thanks in advance!

Hello Loortwin,
Your question is very relevant because IKEA BESTA drawers often do not have built-in child safety locks.
I would recommend the following points:
- Use magnetic child safety locks that are installed invisibly inside the cabinet. For this, you need a small magnet on the drawer and a matching key to open it.
- Alternatively, clamp or latch locks can be installed inside to prevent children from opening the drawers.
- Keep in mind that adhesive strips can lose their grip with frequent drawer use.
If you are unsure which option fits your BESTA system, please let me know. I’d be happy to provide tips on installation.

I would recommend using special child safety locks for drawers that are attached with adhesive strips. That sounds practical at first, but I find adhesive strips not reliable enough for active children. They can usually be easily removed or damaged.

Use magnetic child safety locks that are installed invisibly inside the cabinet.I actually prefer this approach because the magnetic solution has the advantage of being invisible and cannot be opened by the child without the key.
What I find interesting: Are there mechanical solutions that engage with the drawer system without affecting the original functionality and appearance, yet remain permanent and not easy to bypass? I would be interested in practical experience with this.

Are there mechanical solutions that integrate into the drawer system without affecting the original functionality and appearance, but are still durable and not easily bypassed?I’m thinking along the same lines. I don’t want anything that’s constantly visible or bulky, nor anything that permanently alters the drawer. It also needs to be quickly reversible in case I want to use the drawer system differently in the future.
I have considered small latches mounted inside the frame, which wouldn’t be noticeable from the outside. Possibly something combined with magnetic catches.
Additionally, I’d like to know if you have any experience with specific child safety locks from IKEA itself (if they exist) or other brands recommended for this purpose?
How practical are they for everyday use? You don’t want to struggle every time the drawer is opened, but the safety must be very reliable.
Hello Loortwin,
I have a few thoughts from a similar situation that might help you:
- Magnetic child safety locks are cost-effective and discreet. They work well as long as the entire drawer is not too heavy.
- If you prioritize extra high security, you can also install internal push-to-open drawer locks. These require precise drilling, as they have a smaller locking mechanism.
- The original IKEA BESTA components do not include child safety locks, but some recommend combining them with furniture handles that are harder for children to grip in kids’ rooms.
- I would test how easy the locking mechanism is to use during daily routine before the final installation. Sometimes overly complicated solutions are not very practical.
I hope this helps give you some guidance.
