LIASBEHello everyone,
I am looking for practical and proven ways to make IKEA Billy bookcases childproof without compromising the stability of the unit. My children are still quite young, and I want to prevent the bookcase from tipping over or them injuring themselves, especially from pulling out the shelves or climbing on the unit. I have read about wall anchors, edge protectors, and special safety devices, but I am unsure which methods are effective and do not affect the stability. Does anyone have experience or tips on how to make the bookcase both stable and child-safe? Thanks in advance!

An optimal childproof setup of the BILLY shelf primarily requires secure anchoring to the wall, as this eliminates the main cause of tipping. The IKEA wall fasteners are designed to stabilize the unit without negatively affecting its stability.
Additionally, I recommend lining the lower shelves with non-slip material to prevent unintended sliding out of the shelves. Plastic corner protectors can reduce the risk of injury without compromising the shelf’s function or stability.

I completely understand your concern, as I had the exact same issue with my children. We found that simple wall anchors really make a big difference. At first, I also thought it would be inconvenient, but it has brought much more peace of mind. Additionally, securing the lower shelves with closed boxes helped, so we didn’t have to worry about any boards falling out.
