Hello everyone,
I am looking for practical and proven ways to make IKEA Billy bookcases childproof without compromising the stability of the unit. My children are still quite young, and I want to prevent the bookcase from tipping over or them injuring themselves, especially from pulling out the shelves or climbing on the unit. I have read about wall anchors, edge protectors, and special safety devices, but I am unsure which methods are effective and do not affect the stability. Does anyone have experience or tips on how to make the bookcase both stable and child-safe? Thanks in advance!

Foam profiles are sufficient for child safety as they protect against sharp edges. They do not affect stability since they are only attached to the edges. Harder edges, such as those made of plastic, can offer similar protection in emergencies but carry a higher risk of injury if a child bumps into them. Proper wall mounting is crucial, as it remains the key factor for stability.

The original mounting system is designed to be sufficient for standard use in the vast majority of rooms and walls. However, for particularly heavy BILLY shelves or unusual wall materials (e.g., drywall, plasterboard), I recommend using additional angle brackets or specialized anchors for extra stability to improve long-term tipping resistance.
This does not negatively affect stability but reliably prevents tipping. Safety considerations should always take priority here.

I installed child safety locks on the shelves of my BILLY unit to make it harder to pull them out. Once the shelves are secured and the unit is fixed to the wall, this provides extra safety. In any case, make sure to properly install the wall fixings, as that is the most important thing.

I have also read a lot and learned that child safety always works best when multiple measures are combined: securing furniture to the wall is a must, then edge protectors, and it is best to use closed boxes or cabinet doors. Trust the products, but regularly check after installation to make sure everything is still securely in place. This provides safety and peace of mind in everyday life 🙂
