Hello everyone,

I have several Malm furniture pieces from IKEA at home, which I really like for their design and functionality. However, I've noticed that some areas are fading due to direct sunlight, and the surface is starting to look a bit dull. Especially the lighter colors no longer look as fresh, which bothers me quite a bit.

Therefore, I’m looking for practical and effective ways to better protect my Malm furniture from UV light. I’m mainly interested in prevention and maintenance tips that work in the long term, without having to constantly move the furniture or use visually distracting covers.

Does anyone have experience with special products, films, or other measures, maybe even professional solutions or DIY approaches?

How would you specifically go about protecting Malm dressers or beds from UV damage on a permanent basis?

Thanks a lot for your advice and tips!

Hello carismar38,

I completely understand how frustrating it is when your beloved furniture gradually loses its charm due to UV exposure. I’ve had a similar experience with MALM furniture, and it’s always annoying since you can’t exactly banish the sunlight from your living room.

What helped me a bit was a combination of two things:

1. UV protection films / window films: These are quite discreet and block a large portion of UV rays without significantly reducing natural light. After applying them, I noticed a clear difference on the furniture surfaces—they no longer faded as quickly.

2. Care products with UV protection: I found a special oil or wax that leaves a light protective film. It doesn’t feel greasy and gives the furniture a bit more resistance against fading.

Maybe this could be a good starting point for you, so you don’t have to keep moving your furniture around all the time.

What do you think? 🙂

Closing window blinds or curtains during the day helps significantly reduce UV exposure.

Additionally, applying UV-protective film to the windows is inexpensive and provides good protection.

Also consider placing light-colored furniture a bit further away from the window to avoid direct sunlight.

Hello carismar38,

I would like to offer you a brief guide on how to protect MALM furniture from UV light without significantly altering the interior:

1. Location choice: If possible, place the furniture away from direct sunlight. Even slightly moving it can significantly reduce fading.

2. Window UV protection film: These films block more than 90% of UV radiation while allowing daylight to pass through. It is important to purchase a high-quality film and have it professionally installed or apply it carefully yourself to avoid air bubbles.

3. Furniture care with UV protection: There are specially designed furniture care products containing UV filters. These create a protective layer on the surface that reduces UV penetration to some extent. Make sure the product is suitable for veneered surfaces, as MALM often has a thin veneer layer.

4. Regular cleaning: Dust and dirt can damage the surface. Use a soft cloth and mild cleaners to avoid harming the finish.

5. Covers / blinds: If you don’t mind a bit more effort, you can install light-filtering curtains that offer UV protection without darkening the room.

A final important note: Avoid aggressive cleaning agents or abrasive materials, as these can damage the surface treatment and reduce protection for the furniture.

I can only confirm this; it is an effective way to significantly slow down the aging process.

If you like, I can also recommend specific products.

Good luck, and keep us updated!
